One flow. Several ways the land lets go. Sediment retention is the search phrase for keeping particles from leaving. The hold is not generic. A rill on a tilled face, a dust plume on open soil, a collapsing bank, and a burn-scar pulse are the same service failing in different physics.
Match the cover to the failure or you will fund a fence for a wind problem, or a seawall story for a gully. The cover exists whether or not anyone buys a certificate; ensurance funds the condition, it is not the soil.
four failures, one flow
Erosion control — defined here — is soil staying put. Sediment retention is the same job named from downstream: particles that never entered the channel, or dropped out on a floodplain before the intake.
| Failure | What lets go | Cover that holds | Do not pretend |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hillslope (water) | Sheet, rill, gully on a grade | Residue, roots, contour, roughness, wet meadows | A perimeter fence as the whole plan |
| Wind | Dry, bare, pulverized soil | Cover crop, stubble, windbreak, biocrust | Irrigation as if it were a desert restoration |
| Bank / channel | Toe scour, mass wasting into the stream | Riparian roots, benches, connected floodplain, grade control | Riprap as a river |
| Post-fire pulse | Hydrophobic soils, no litter, ash and fines | Fast mulch then living cover; wet ground that did not burn | A BAER drop as a permanent forest |
Coastal edge — dune, marsh, reef — is a fifth row that already has its own series. Beach and surge already live in missing marsh and missing reef. If your sediment is sand leaving a shore, go there. This page stays inland and upslope except for that pointer.
hillslope water
Most agricultural and construction sediment starts as rain on bare ground. The drop detaches; the sheet concentrates; the rill becomes a gully. Sediment retention on a field is residue and living roots that keep the drop from ever starting that sequence. Grade control — a rock structure, a beaver analog, a fan that can spread — is what you add when the rill already exists.
Process-based work in California tributaries after fire is the same idea: wood and rock that hold sediment higher in the watershed instead of delivering it in one pulse. Arizona work after the Museum Fire modeled alluvial-fan restoration cutting downstream transport on the order of 70% in that study's mitigation run (NHESS, 2025) — an illustration of type, not a Flagstaff series. Re-verify before you put it in a board deck.
wind
Wind does not care about your silt fence. It wants dry, loose, unsheltered fines. The hold is cover that stays through the windy month: stubble, a crop, a barrier, or the living skin of dryland soil. Cryptobiotic crust is that skin — a stock that does this flow on the Colorado Plateau and other dry ground. One sentence, then back. Do not drive through crust to inspect a fence.
bank and channel
A hillslope BMP does nothing if the failure is a vertical bank in a flashy creek. Retention here is roughness and roots at the toe, a bench the flood can spend itself on, a floodplain that is still a wetland that works. Hard toe can buy time. It is not the river. Zeedyk-style induced meanders and one-rock dams are cousins — field methods, not a product pitch.
the post-fire pulse
Fire deletes the hillslope hold and can cook the soil so it sheds. The first winters are the pulse; later years are stored sediment moving down. You don't have a sediment problem is the invoice. Wet land doesn't burn is the prevention that is water, not mulch. USFS BAER and county emergency watershed work are cousins for month one. They are not a second wildfire series and not a substitute for cover in year four.
name the failure, then fund the hold
A district that buys wattles for a wind-eroding field will look busy and stay dirty. A utility that only upgrades the plant will treat dirt that a meadow could have kept. Walk the contributing acres. Say which row you are in. Then fund that cover.
erosion-control.ensurance is the flow agent for the service, not a SKU per failure type. Explore the place. Who pays is the last door. A credit that does not name the row is a unit without physics.
the series
Six posts on erosion control as a living flow — what it is, what a receipt for it is not, and who already pays when the land lets go.
