People type natural assets examples and get a sleeve: a nature theme, a water-infrastructure tilt, a company that once tried to list. None of those is an example. An example is the Everglades still moving as sheetflow. An example is elkhorn coral still building a breakwater. An example is the Bristol Bay sockeye run still coming home.

Specificity is the whole method. "Wetlands" is a family. The Everglades is an example. "Coral" is a category. Elkhorn is an example. "Salmon" is a word that has already been stretched to cover hatchery trucks. The Bristol Bay sockeye run is an example.

a place: the everglades
South Florida is not a swamp that failed to drain. It is a living sheet of water that used to walk, slowly, from Lake Okeechobee toward Florida Bay.
The National Park Service still describes the sloughs as marshy rivers that stay flooded almost year-round, the current moving about a hundred feet a day. USGS calls that shallow, slow water sheetflow, and treats it as the process that keeps the ridge-and-slough landscape — sawgrass ridges, wet prairie, tree islands — in the shape it is. Sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense) is a sedge, not a grass. Marjory Stoneman Douglas named the system a river of grass in 1947 because the water, not the land survey, was the thing.
Elevation changes of inches decide which plants live. Shark River Slough and Taylor Slough still carry what water they can into Florida Bay. Canals, levees, and roads compartmentalized the rest. The living system did not become a lot line when the water was rerouted. Miccosukee and Seminole people were naming and living in this marsh long before it was a restoration program. A CIO who books "Florida water infrastructure" is holding a different object from the slough.
The Everglades is a place: a named living system at a location. It is one specimen of the family that what wetlands actually are defines. That page is the type. This is an example. You already knew it was not leftover land. The list that files it next to a ticker is the thing that needs correcting.
a species: elkhorn coral
Elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata) is not a postcard and it is not a mascot. It is an animal that built the Caribbean reef crest.
NOAA Fisheries calls it one of the most important corals in the Caribbean: elkhorn, staghorn, and the star corals built those reefs over the last 5,000 years. A colony can reach six feet high and twelve feet across. In shallow, high-energy water the colonies lock into thickets. When they are abundant, they take large waves and storms before the shore does. That is a species doing a job.
White band disease, beginning in the 1980s, cut the population by about 97 percent. NOAA's current number is less than 3 percent of former abundance. The United States listed elkhorn as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 2006; the IUCN Red List assesses Acropora palmata as Critically Endangered. Marine heatwaves in 2023 and 2024 killed 89 to 100 percent of known wild and restored colonies in the Florida Keys.
A recovery plan is not the coral. A nursery fragment is not the thicket. The species is the living population still trying to be a breakwater. That is the example. The type it belongs to — the animal city, not the payout — is what coral reefs actually are.
a process: the bristol bay sockeye run
A fish in a tote is not a run. A run is a process: ocean years, a homing, a pulse of bodies into nine river systems, gravel, death, and a transfer of marine nutrients into the lakes and the banks.
Alaska Department of Fish and Game calls Bristol Bay the largest commercial sockeye salmon producing region in the world. Nine rivers do almost all of the work: Naknek, Kvichak, Alagnak, Egegik, Ugashik, Wood, Nushagak, Igushik, Togiak. The 2022 inshore sockeye run was about 79.1 million fish, the largest in the department's record. That number is a census of a process, not a ticker.
Alaska Native communities fished these returns long before the commercial season had a management report. The run is not a brand. It is work the watershed still does, some years larger, some years not, and it fails as a process when the riverscape fails — even if a hatchery truck is full.
The distinction between a fish you can count and a run that still functions is already on this site: a hatchery fish is not a salmon run. What the animal is, without stretching the word, is what salmon actually are. This page only needs one fact: a named run is an example of a natural asset. A salmon-themed sleeve is not.

Contrast is not an insult to the people who built the vehicles. A natural asset company is a corporate wrapper around rights to services; landowners keep the ground. That was a serious attempt to give capital a hold. The proposed NYSE listing of that wrapper was withdrawn. The meadow did not close with it. The autopsy belongs in a natural asset company is not the asset, not here.
A certificate is the closest confusion, which is why allocators deserve it said plainly. It names a living system. It can fund that system's present condition. It is still not the acre. Title remains title. A land trust's easement remains an easement. None of those are fake, and none of them are the slough, the thicket, or the run.
three doors, not a catalog
You do not need every biome to see the pattern. Three types will do, and each already has a definition on this site.
What wetlands actually are is the family the Everglades sits in: working hydrologic infrastructure, not leftover land and not a credit. What forests actually are is the same cut for a stand — canopy, understory, soil, deadwood — not a seedling bag and not a timber REIT. A named forest is a natural asset. A forestry sleeve is not. What coral reefs actually are is the animal city elkhorn still belongs to.
The rest of the living-system doors are there when you need them: estuaries, grasslands, deserts. They are types. They are not a list of tickers.
