"Save the Great Barrier Reef" is a reasonable thing to type into a search bar. The trouble starts one click later, when the advice that comes back would be wrong in Cozumel, wrong on Tarawa, and wrong on a reef two hours out of Puerto Vallarta.
The Great Barrier Reef is a type of reef, not a synonym for reef. Veron's global analysis of zooxanthellate corals reaffirms the category split: the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific share effectively no reef-building coral species. Not a regional accent. Two different casts of animals, doing the same job, in different seas.
So before anyone spends money on a reef, there is a prior question: which reef. This is for sea and land stewards, park and fisheries staff, regional partnerships, and Traditional Owners and tribal marine programs who have to turn a grant line that says "coral reef" into work on a specific reef in a specific water.
the search term hides at least five reefs
A coral reef is a living animal city — coral animals, the algae living inside their tissue, the fish and invertebrates that use the structure, and the calcium carbonate they lay down. That definition holds everywhere. Almost nothing else does. Species pool, growth rate, dominant disturbance, and the way the reef comes apart all change by province.

Caribbean, Indo-Pacific, and Pacific atolls are not the same reef. The type differs. Keeping the animal city living is the job.
the two numbers that explain the table
About 61 reef-building coral species in the Caribbean. About 605 in the Coral Triangle. That is not trivia — it is bench depth. An Atlantic reef that loses its acroporids loses the branching structure outright, because there is no deep roster of substitutes and no upstream ocean to send larvae. An Indo-Pacific reef can lose a genus and still have a rebuilder, which is why the same heat event reads as collapse in one sea and as a bad decade in another.
The global average hides all of it. GCRMN's 2025 assessment — 21.1 million observations from 36,886 sites in 124 countries — puts global hard coral cover at 27.3% for 2020–2024, down a relative 9.5% from the 30.2% average of 1980–2009, and at 25.8% in 2024. Underneath that, four regions are in long-term decline (Caribbean, ROPME Sea Area, Australia, Pacific), four show no net change (Brazil, East Asian Seas, Eastern Tropical Pacific, Red Sea and Gulf of Aden), and two are recovering from already-degraded baselines (South Asia, Western Indian Ocean).
Two more facts belong together. Bleaching events now recur every five to six years instead of roughly once a decade, and NOAA Coral Reef Watch put about 84% of the world's reef area under bleaching-level heat stress during the fourth global event. But global cover also rose about 6% between 2017 and 2019, when the heat eased. Reefs still recover. They are being given less time to do it.

Get the type wrong and competent money does the wrong verb. Outplanting Acropora into a Caribbean site with no grazers and an active disease front is not reef recovery. Fighting crown-of-thorns on an atoll whose problem is a collapsed sediment budget is not island defense.
the great barrier reef is a type, not a rescue target
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system on Earth. It sits inside GCRMN's Australia region — about 43,000 km² of coral reef, roughly 17% of global reef extent — and the eastern shelf subregion holding the GBR, Torres Strait and South East Queensland accounts for 34,503 km², 81.6% of Australia's mapped reef. More than a million people live in its catchment. Australia has the highest share of population living within 100 km of a reef of any GCRMN region: 37%.
It is also the most governed reef on the planet. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Commonwealth and Queensland water-quality programs, starfish control, zoning, fishery rules — and the Traditional Owners whose Sea Country knowledge GCRMN's own authors describe as the oldest continuous reef monitoring system on Earth. If you typed "save the Great Barrier Reef" picturing an unmanaged reef waiting for a rescuer, that is not the situation.
What the reef needs is not mysterious either, and the report says the awkward part plainly: zoning, fishery controls, starfish control and water-quality work do reduce local pressure, but the benefits are increasingly constrained by recurrent climate-driven disturbance. GCRMN's Australia chapter calls the 2024 summer temperature anomalies unprecedented in at least 400 years and expects the 2024–2025 event to be the region's most severe mass bleaching on record. In the Coral Sea next door, cover fell from 23.6% in 2020 to 8.9% in 2024.
So here is the honest version of the search term. The GBR is one type among several, already carrying a park authority, a long-term monitoring program and an act of parliament. The reef with no authority, no long-term monitoring and no line item is more often a Gilberts atoll, a Mesoamerican lagoon, or a rocky-islet reef off a Mexican tourist bay. Naming the type is how you find out which one you are standing in front of. A global average is not a place.
what is not a row in this table
Mangroves, seagrass and salt marsh are coastal systems that run on the tide, not reef, and they already have their own cut: mangroves, seagrass, and salt marsh are not the same coast.
Cold-water corals — the nearly continuous Desmophyllum pertusum mounds NOAA mapped across 6.4 million acres of the Blake Plateau at 500–1,000 m, built with no sunlight and no symbiotic algae — are real reefs that lose ground to trawl gear and ocean chemistry rather than to a hot summer, and they are not a sixth warm-water type we are claiming here.
A reef-linked insurance payout is a different object again — the limit, not the living reef. That distinction is a payout is not a reef.
a small pacific-mexico example
Two hours by boat from Puerto Vallarta, the Islas Marietas sit at the mouth of Bahía de Banderas, where the California Current, the Costa Rica Coastal Current and Gulf of California water converge. The reef there is not a clean version of any headline type: Pocillopora, Pavona and Porites assemblages on volcanic rock, inside the smallest reef region GCRMN tracks. The Eastern Tropical Pacific holds 593 km² of coral reef — 0.2% of global extent.
It is also one of the few reefs with a published recovery curve. Live coral cover at Marietas rose from 12.11% in 2012 to 25.29% in 2022, after the 2016 temporary closure and the carrying-capacity rules that followed — while the tour sector still perceived decline. The park averaged about 179,545 visitors a year over 2012–2022, with a peak of 325,000 in 2015. CONANP runs it. A licensed fleet sells access to it, and 2016 already showed that fleet what reef failure costs, because access revenue went to zero.
Regionally, the pattern is the same shape. Eastern Tropical Pacific cover fell from 28.1% in 1994 to 13.8% in 2007, climbed back through 2021, and stood at 20.6% in 2024 — no net multi-decadal change. Part of the reason is that the region's oceanography is violently variable, which appears to pre-condition corals to thermal stress, and Pocillopora at some sites is shifting its symbiont algae toward the more heat-tolerant genus Durusdinium.
None of that makes the bay a product. bahia-de-banderas.basin is the place agent Marietas proceeds would route through; nothing Marietas-specific has been minted, and the reef work there belongs to CONANP, the operators' association and the universities already monitoring it. The point is the type: a small, high-variability, Pocillopora-led Pacific-Mexico reef whose main lever is rationed access plus water quality — not the same lever as a Caribbean disease front, and not the same lever as an atoll's sediment budget.
name the type, then name the place
The type tells you what the reef needs. It does not tell you who pays for it while it is still living, which is the gap ensurance works in. An agent stands for a named place or stock. A certificate funds that agent directly. A coin funds the category rather than the parcel. Beneficiaries downstream of a working reef — dive fleets, hotels, fishing towns, coastal insurers, a park authority with a fee gap — can pay for reef condition now instead of paying for the failure later.
Live doors: marine-systems.ensurance for the stock, coral-reef.syndicate for reef-to-reef coordination, and a place agent such as bahia-de-banderas.basin for a single named water. Volumes are small. We would rather say that than imply a reef market that is not there, and we are not pointing you at a reef token we have not minted.
