Peatlands cover about 3% of the world's land surface and hold at least 550 gigatonnes of carbon — more than twice the carbon in the world's forest biomass, by IUCN's count. That store is not held in place by the trees, the moss, the fence line, or the protection designation.
It is held in place by water. Take the water away and the stock leaves as gas, on an ordinary Tuesday, with no event to report.
what a peatland actually is
A peatland is a wetland where the ground itself is made of the plants that grew there and never finished rotting. In waterlogged soil, oxygen cannot reach dead plant material fast enough for microbes to break it down. So it doesn't decompose. It piles up — leaf by leaf, root by root, sphagnum stem by sphagnum stem — into a dark, wet, carbon-dense soil called peat.
Definitions vary by country, but most draw the line at roughly 30 centimeters of soil that is at least 30% organic matter. Under many peatlands that layer runs meters deep, and a single meter can represent a thousand years or more of accumulation.
What grows on top varies enormously: sphagnum lawns and cottongrass in a northern bog, pond pine and evergreen shrubs on a Carolina pocosin, cypress in a southern swamp, a closed forest canopy on tropical peat in Borneo. What matters is underneath. And it only stays underneath because it is wet.

Building a meter of peat takes a millennium of waterlogging. Undoing it takes a ditch and a few decades.
Drain a peatland and you introduce oxygen to material that has been shielded from it for thousands of years. Microbes restart. The peat oxidizes — not dramatically, just steadily, every ordinary year, across every drained field. The ground surface subsides, sometimes by centimeters a year. Carbon that took a thousand years to bank leaves over a human lifetime.
This is easy to miss because nothing happens. There is no fire, no spill, no press release. IUCN estimates emissions from drained peatlands at 1.9 gigatonnes of CO₂-equivalent a year — about 5% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, from damaged peatland covering roughly 0.3% of the planet's land.
When fire does reach dry peat, it behaves nothing like a forest fire. It burns downward into the soil and can smolder for months. That is its own post: drain it and it burns.
One honest complication any peatland ecologist will raise: intact, wet peatlands emit methane. That is part of a functioning peatland's natural budget, and it makes the accounting harder rather than making the case weaker. rewetting is keeping the peat wet handles it directly.

Conflating them is the most expensive habit in this field.

That last row is not an accusation. A credit can be well-built, honestly verified, and the reason a ditch gets blocked at all. But a credit and a peatland are different objects, and only one of them is thousands of years of carbon sitting in the ground under someone's boots. a carbon credit is not a wet peatland takes that apart properly.
The peatland exists whether or not anyone buys a certificate. It was accumulating before the registry, before the refuge, before the deed. Ensurance is how a beneficiary funds the wet condition on a named place. It is not the peatland.
not all of them look wet
A pocosin is the US coastal-plain version — from Virginia and Carolina Algonquian poquosin. The popular "swamp on a hill" gloss has no linguistic source — post 5 walks that down. It is a rain-fed peatland on a coastal-plain divide, which is why it can sit wet uphill of everything nearby. North Carolina's Albemarle Peninsula holds one of the largest concentrations in the country; Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge alone covers 110,106 acres, and much of the peatland surrounding it was ditched generations ago for farming and timber.
Walk onto an Irish raised bog in February and it can look like dry heath — heather, bog cotton stubble, straw-colored grass, no standing water anywhere. At the cut and drained edges the birch and gorse come in; a meter down the peat can still be saturated. The wetness is a property of the ground, not of the view.
Bogs, fens, pocosins, and tropical peat swamp forests differ mainly in where their water comes from, and that difference decides what restoring any of them requires. The types table lives in bogs, fens, and pocosins are not the same peatland. the door is "keep it wet"
Once you see a peatland as a stock held up by a water table, the question changes shape. It stops being how do we protect this landscape? — vast, and funded one grant cycle at a time — and becomes who is paying to hold the water up this year? Refuges already do the hydrology work. Pocosin Lakes is one of the country's largest wetland restorations. The missing piece is a payor who stays after the grant.
That is a smaller and far more answerable question. Ditch plugs and water-control structures are cheap in materials; the real cost is the neighbor's water table and the road bed — which is who pays. What has been missing is a payor for the condition rather than a payor for a project, a grant cycle, or a unit.
That is what ensurance is for: a beneficiary funds the ecological condition of a named place up front and holds a certificate tied to that specific place, rather than a fungible unit of avoided emissions. The peat-relevant doors that exist today are peatland.syndicate and inland-wetlands.ensurance. Volumes are small — we would rather say so than imply otherwise. The peat is the asset. The instrument is plumbing.
Who actually writes that check — the credit buyer, the refuge, the drainage district, the estuary downstream — is who pays to keep peat wet.
