# can tho stands on a rice plain

*the door is a city. the subject is the field that drinks the mekong.*

Mekong Delta rice is water standing on a field, and then a harvest. If you have only met it as a grain in a sack, start with the water. The sack is what leaves. The field is what has to keep working for another sack to exist next season.

Can Tho is the door. The city sits in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, beside the Hau, a branch of the Mekong. Leave the paved streets when the canals are up. Past the last street the ground holds a sheet of that water, and the crop stands in the sheet. At the bank the smell is wet soil. Past the bank the green is a season of food.

A city is easy to cite, which is why a search for this rice so often hands you Can Tho and stops. A flooded plain is harder to fit in a sentence, so it gets treated as scenery. The plain is the subject. The city is how you arrive.

You come in through the city. The living thing is the flooded field.

## what mekong delta rice is

**Mekong Delta rice** is rice grown on the delta's flooded fields. In a trade note the phrase means grain that left those fields. On the ground it means the fields themselves: soil, fresh water held on the soil, and the crop rooted in both.

The water is the condition of the ground. Someone lets river water onto the field. The paddy keeps that water while the rice needs it. Later the water is drawn down so the grain can finish. What you cut is the plant. What made the cutting possible is the held water and the soil under it. The grain is a result. The field is the system.

Can Tho can lead a sentence because the name is already on maps. The plain under the name is the part that can fail. When a page says Mekong Delta rice and then talks only about a port, a contract, or a city limit, ask where the water stood this season. A page with no field is about a shipment. The shipment matters. The dependence is still the field.

The next pages ask who else is tied to the harvest, and what happens when the canal water is no longer fresh enough for the crop.

## what the plain depends on

Follow the water the way you would follow a supplier you had never contracted. The river reaches the delta. Canals carry that water toward the crop. The paddy holds a shallow sheet of it. The rice grows in the sheet. The sheet comes off. The harvest leaves. The meal in the city and the sack that leaves the delta both assume the chain held. Fresh water is the link a purchase order cannot replace.

In a generous season the plain looks like one small decision repeated on bund after bund. Let the water in. Keep it. Let it out. The bunds are low, and that work is the supply. In a thin season those same bunds are used to keep water off the crop, or to keep poorer water from sitting on it. The field has not moved. It is being offered water it cannot use.

The plain depends on the Mekong staying fresh enough to irrigate. People in Can Tho, and people downstream of these fields, depend on that plain still being a rice plain. They eat from it, and they count on the next crop. Houses, markets, and the roads between them sit on ground that works as this city because the ground around it still works as a paddy. If that ground stops holding fresh water, the name on the map can stay and the place has still changed.

The river, taken whole, is a different subject. These pages stay on the field.

## the hectares behind the door

On 2 September 2026, New Forests published a release from Tokyo and Singapore. It describes Green Carbon's **current operations** in Can Tho at about **8,000 hectares**. Keep their phrase. Current operations means the ground the company says it is working. When the figure travels into a briefing, keep the speaker and the date beside it. A registry extract would be a different document. A survey of the rice plain would be a different document. The figure is not the area of the city, and it is not every rice field in the delta.

The same sentence places about **2,000 hectares** in Phu Tho, which is not the Mekong Delta and not this river.

Two other citations name the same kind of field, and they stay separate from the Can Tho figure and from each other. A Green Carbon page dated 24 April 2025 records a finished demonstration in An Giang of about **100 hectares**, across three crop cycles. The water was held, and a crop came off that ground three times. That is a field already farmed. In Battambang, in Cambodia, the 2025 wet season covered **1,089.66 hectares**, on a page stamped 27 February 2026. Read it as one wet season, counted as itself: water on soil, a crop taken through.

Same kind of field in Can Tho, An Giang, and Battambang. Three figures, each with its own date. Add them and the sum is a farm nobody planted. The rice plain is larger than these citations. The citations are the named work. They stay plural, and Can Tho keeps only the figure it was given.

## who shares the plain

If you live in Can Tho, the plain is already in your week. The rice you buy was standing in river water on ground the city is built against. Dinner puts you in the dependence.

If you farm one of these fields, the dependence is the sequence at the bund. Fresh water in, held while the crop needs it, out when the grain needs the soil to firm. Your season is that sequence. If your name is on the parcel and someone else stands in the water, you still hold the soil the next crop has to root in. The harvest can be another person's labor. The condition of that soil is what makes a next season possible.

If you govern the city or the province, the door is yours to administer and the field stays where it is when the brief changes. You are responsible for a place that eats from a supplier the office does not own. Name the supplier as the field and the city as the door. Work that reaches from Can Tho to An Giang and on to Battambang is that same recognition across a border: one kind of flooded field, and people on each piece of it who need the water to stay fresh. The collaboration stays honest while the hectares remain separate sentences.

If you eat from the plain, farm it, hold a parcel of it, or sign papers over it, you are already one of the people it holds up.

## the field is already there

Green Carbon operates the Can Tho, An Giang, and Battambang fields named above, and develops a methane credit from those fields. The credit is their product. The paddy is the living thing: water held on the soil, and the crop. The operator is already on the ground. The sale is theirs. The paddy is what the meal came from.

The flooded fields, the water they hold, and the soil under the crop are already there. They exist whether or not anyone buys a certificate. A buyer who already takes the harvest can fund that living paddy. *ensurance* is that funding. It funds the field. The funding is not the methane credit, and it is not the river.

New Forests is how the Can Tho figure became a public sentence. What they have with the operator is a memorandum. They have not deployed capital into the plain, and they are not a buyer of the field's condition. Water-user associations, a university, and the ministries already coordinate on these places. They are the people in the work.

The parent already on the map for this water is [water abundance](/water-abundance.ensurance?from=guide). Open it for the flow the paddy holds and needs.

## from the door

When the words Mekong Delta rice appear, separate the city from the field, and keep each cited hectare in its own sentence with its date. The plain is clearer once it is allowed to be more than a single number.

[Who depends on Mekong rice](/guide/who-depends-on-mekong-rice) stays with the people on the harvest. [The salt that reaches the rice](/guide/the-salt-that-reaches-the-rice) stays with the failure of this dependence: canal water that reaches the crop and still cannot be used to irrigate. You have the condition. That page has the years.

If this plain is not yours, [start from another place](/explore?from=guide). A government reader can start with [climate adaptation planning](/solutions/governments?from=guide&topic=mekong-rice). Each cited hectare stays in its own place.

Stand again at that edge. Wet soil, a crop in standing water, a city that fits easily in a sentence. The subject is the field that takes the Mekong's fresh water and feeds the people on it.

## frequently asked questions

### what is mekong delta rice?

Mekong Delta rice is rice grown on flooded fields in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. The phrase points at a harvest. Under the harvest is the field: fresh water from the Mekong, held on the soil, with the crop standing in it. Can Tho is a city on that plain, and the door into it. The living system is the paddy.

### what does the rice plain depend on?

It depends on the Mekong reaching the fields fresh enough to irrigate. Households in Can Tho, and people downstream, depend on that ground remaining a rice plain. The field needs fresh water. The people need the field.

### what does the can tho hectare figure mean?

On 2 September 2026, New Forests described Green Carbon's current operations in Can Tho at about 8,000 hectares. The words current operations are theirs. Use the figure as that description, with the date. A registry extract would be a different document, and so would a survey of the delta or a census of the city. Other fields of the same kind are cited on their own dates, and they stay separate from this figure.
