# what counts as a purpose?

*a flow, an ecosystem, a species, a cause, or a reason you cannot explain*

A **cause** is an aim that people work toward together because they believe it matters: a river that runs clean, a herd that keeps its winter range, a street that stays livable in August, a practice kept alive on the land. The word covers the march and the bake sale, the board seat and the Saturday crew. Most causes have a living thing at the center. A cutthroat trout holding in a cold headwater pool is a cause for the anglers, biologists, ranchers, and agencies who have spent decades keeping its creeks cold and connected.

People already give to causes, and they mostly give in four families. Each one already has places where the work happens.

| cause family | the living thing at the center | where people already give or show up |
|---|---|---|
| Water | A river, an aquifer, a wetland | Watershed councils, river cleanups, a town's water board, a land trust's riparian project |
| Wildlife | A herd, a run of fish, a bird | Habitat work days, volunteer bird and fish counts, hunting and angling conservation groups |
| Climate | The snowpack, the canopy, a coastline | Tree plantings, neighborhood cooling projects, local climate groups |
| A place's culture | A river fished for generations, a meadow tended by fire | Historical societies, community land programs, the people who already keep those practices |

That is the plain answer. This series takes one step past it. A cause is one kind of **purpose**. A plain interest is another: something one person cares about with no campaign behind it, like the heron that fishes the same bend every morning, or the spring a family has drunk from for three generations. Whether the aim is shared by millions or held by one person, it can be named, and a named purpose can hold an account of its own.

The trout, the wetland, and the heron already exist and already depend on other living things, whether or not anyone names them. **[Ensurance](https://ensurance.app/?from=guide)** is how the purpose you name gets funded to keep working. It is not the trout, and it is not the cause.

**a cause, an interest, a reason — name it, and the people who keep it can give it an address.**

## a cause is a purpose, and so is an interest

On ensurance, every account belongs to one of three legs: **place** (a point or a polygon), **purpose** (a cause or an impact), and **people** (a person or a group). A purpose is what a place is for, or what someone cares about wherever it shows up. Clean water is a purpose. So is wetlands everywhere. So is one subspecies of trout, the shade on a hot block, and the plain fact that a thing exists.

An account, in plain terms, is a public ledger entry with an address. It can hold, receive, and act, and a person confirms what it does, unless they have switched on a program. Strip the ledger away and the idea still stands: give the aim a name and a place to receive support, so support does not have to wait for a single parcel or a single organization to carry it.

## the purpose ladder, widest to narrowest

Here is the purpose leg at seven sizes, each a live account in the catalog, read on 26 October 2026. The middle column paraphrases each account's description; water-abundance and existence-legacy have none, so those two lines are ours.

| size | account | what it is for | wallet |
|---|---|---|---|
| A planetary flow | [water-cycle.syndicate](/water-cycle.syndicate?from=guide) | Snow, rain, aquifer recharge, and watershed function together | Deployed |
| A flow | [water-abundance.ensurance](/water-abundance.ensurance?from=guide) | Water held and supplied, one of the protocol's 19 flows | Deployed |
| A stock | [inland-wetlands.ensurance](/inland-wetlands.ensurance?from=guide) | Marshes, swamps, bogs, fens, floodplains, and peatlands, wherever they are | Deployed |
| A species | [elk.syndicate](/elk.syndicate?from=guide) | Elk habitat across western North America | Deployed |
| A species down to one creek | [cutthroat-trout.syndicate](/cutthroat-trout.syndicate?from=guide) | Native trout of western headwaters, where pure lineages hold or are lost | Deployed |
| A cause | [urban-heat.syndicate](/urban-heat.syndicate?from=guide) | Tree canopy, parks, and cool corridors that take the edge off city heat | Deployed |
| A reason | [existence-legacy.ensurance](/existence-legacy.ensurance?from=guide) | The worth of a thing existing, and of leaving it to those who come after | Address only |

A deployed wallet means the address can hold and act. It says nothing about what, if anything, it holds. The last row is an address with no wallet yet.

**What stays the same at every rung:** one account shape. A name, an address, a purpose it is for, and people who sign for it. Nothing new is invented at the top or the bottom.

**What changes:** the grain. At the water cycle the evidence is snowpack and recharge across a continent; at the trout it is a count in one creek and a genetic test; at the reason there is no meter at all. Who keeps it changes too, from agencies and basin-wide partnerships down to one angler's club or one family. The closer you look, the more purposes there are to name, which is the same pattern as [the coastline that grows longer the closer you look](/guide/the-coastline-gets-longer-the-closer-you-look?from=guide). Pick the size you can actually act on.

## what a syndicate is

A `.syndicate` account is for something, a species or a cause, so its leg is purpose even when it coordinates many places and many people. The cutthroat syndicate is not a creek and not a club. It is the aim that creeks and clubs share.

## the honest count

On 26 October 2026 the catalog held 2,085 active accounts: 1,671 place, 220 people, 185 purpose, and 9 untyped. Eighty-six had a wallet deployed, 23 of them purpose accounts. Purpose is the thinnest of the three legs. Most of what has been named so far is ground, not aims.

Two more limits belong in plain sight. Several accounts can serve the same species or the same cause, and none of them speaks for it. The elk syndicate does not represent elk, and it does not replace the land trusts, agencies, hunters, and tribes already keeping winter range open. The account sits beside the people already doing the work, and they govern.

## the rest of this series

**[a flow is a purpose](/guide/a-flow-is-a-purpose?from=guide).** Ecosystem services are usually sorted into four types. The protocol keeps a finer list of 19 flows, and each one is a purpose with its own account.

**[an ecosystem is a purpose too](/guide/an-ecosystem-is-a-purpose-too?from=guide).** The 15 ecosystem types are stocks. "Wetlands everywhere" is a purpose. One 54-acre beaver wetland at Marble, Colorado, is a place. The same stock sits on two legs.

**[species, subspecies, and the population in one creek](/guide/species-subspecies-population?from=guide).** The law already counts subspecies and distinct populations as species. A purpose can zoom in as far as the life does: from cutthroat trout to one lineage in one small creek.

**[some things are kept for no price](/guide/some-things-are-kept-for-no-price?from=guide).** Existence, legacy, beauty. An economist made the case for valuing things people never use in 1967, and economists still argue over how to measure it. A purpose does not need a price to count.

**[every purpose needs people who keep it](/guide/every-purpose-needs-people-who-keep-it?from=guide).** How to support a cause, and why every purpose account is kept by named people. A purpose lives somewhere, and someone signs for it.

## a purpose lives somewhere, and someone keeps it

No purpose floats free. The trout lives in named creeks; the wetland sits on named ground; the cooling canopy grows on named blocks. That is the [place series](/guide/what-counts-as-a-place?from=guide). And no purpose keeps itself. Somebody walks the creek, plants the tree, signs for the account. That is the [people series](/guide/who-counts-as-people?from=guide). The three legs relate in every direction, including to themselves: the trout depends on cold water, which is a purpose depending on a purpose.

If you already keep something and can name the aim behind it, [open an account for it](/agents/create?from=guide). If your aim is too wide for one account, a theme the whole protocol could carry, [suggest it here](/general/create?mode=suggest&from=guide). And if you would rather talk it through first, [tell us what you want to keep](/contact?from=guide&topic=ppp-purpose).

## frequently asked questions

### what is a cause?

A cause is an aim people work toward together because they believe it matters, such as clean water, a species in decline, or a cooler city. Most causes center on a living thing. On ensurance a cause is one kind of purpose, and a purpose can hold its own account.

### is a cause the same as a purpose?

A cause is one kind of purpose. A purpose also includes a flow like clean water, an ecosystem like wetlands, a species or one population of it, and a reason that needs no use at all, like a thing simply existing. A plain personal interest counts too.

### can a cause have its own account?

Yes. A purpose account is a public ledger entry with an address that can receive support and act, with a person confirming each action unless they have switched on a program. It is not legal personhood, and it does not speak for the cause. Several accounts can serve the same cause side by side.
