Tropical forests are not temperate forests that never got cold.
They are stands that grow without frost: a multi-story canopy, a soil that stays warm enough to keep cycling, rain that arrives as a season or as a year. Convert them to pasture, a pulp rotation, or a carbon vintage and you can still be holding a receipt. The type is not decoration. It is which climate the stand still has to work in.
This post is for land stewards, forest-program staff, and landscape partnerships. One grant line that says "forest" can fund a wet Amazon stand, a Douglas-fir working forest, a black-spruce peat mosaic, or a seasonally dry woodland. Get the type wrong and the money does competent work on the wrong climate.
what tropical forests actually are
Tropical forests are forests in the tropical climate domain: all months without frost (in marine settings, mean temperatures stay above about 18°C). That is FAO's Global Ecological Zoning, the same map the Forest Resources Assessment uses to put rain forest, moist deciduous forest, dry forest, and tropical mountain systems in one domain. They are not "more trees." They are a living stand — canopy, understory, soil, deadwood, water and fire process — that has to keep working in heat.
FAO files tropical rain forest as the wet end (roughly 0–3 dry months). The Amazon, the Congo Basin, and much of Southeast Asia sit there. Moist deciduous tropical forest has a real dry season. Dry tropical forest has a longer one. The job is the same job a temperate mixed stand and a boreal needle stand do on their own terms: keep the stand standing long enough to make shade, rain recycling, timber where that is the use, habitat, and carbon in wood and soil. The climate changes. The stand is the job.
A mangrove is not a row in this table. It is a tidal coast under trees — mangroves, seagrass, and salt marsh are not the same coast. City shade is not a row either. Street trees and park canopy are a cooling job — how to cool a city. This series owns the named forest stock.
rain, leaf, needle — or a dry season
"Forest" is a category, not a climate. What you actually walk, mark, or restore has a name:

Tropical, temperate, and boreal are not the same forest. Type differs. The stand is the job.
plantation and native stand are not a fifth climate
A working plantation can be tropical eucalyptus, southern pine, or Douglas-fir and still count as forest on a canopy map. FSC and a TIMO rotation are doing a real timber job. That is not the same as a native mixed stand of that type — missing understory, missing deadwood, missing the fire or flood process that made the original forest a forest.
Name the difference, then return to type. The failure is calling the plantation the biome, or calling a seedling bag a stand. Planting is sometimes the right tool after a burn or on degraded ground. That honesty lives with a planted tree is not a forest. A credit issued against any of these acres can be a real receipt and still not be the stand — a carbon credit is not a forest.
the ones people get wrong
A tropical forest is not a temperate forest with extra rain. Frost, leaf drop, and a four-to-eight-month growing season are not a humidity setting. Restore an Amazon gap with a temperate planting list and you have a list, not a tropical stand.
A boreal forest is not a cold plantation. The carbon clock is often in soil, peat, and a fire interval measured in decades, not in a fast cubic-metre. Treat it like a southern pine rotation and the stand you get is the rotation.
A dry forest is not a failed rainforest. FAO already maps tropical dry forest as its own ecological zone. It drops leaves, it waits on rain, some of it uses fire. Water it into a wet-forest fantasy and you spend the budget on the wrong season.
Mangrove is coastal, not a tropical-forest subtype for this table. FAO leaves mangroves as azonal vegetation — they sit on the tide, not on the Köppen domain. Do not pad a terra firme hectare with a mangrove planting plan.
Urban canopy is cooling, not this stock. A street tree is air-conditioning and stormwater for a block. The living forest stock is still canopy, understory, soil, and process on a named place — including when a missing rural canopy is also a missing cooler (deforestation as a planet cooling system).
naming the type is the first move of any plan
The type tells you which climate the restoration has to match, and that determines whose hands the fix runs through.

Get this wrong and the money goes to the wrong verb. Planting a wet-forest mix on a five-month dry woodland does not make tropical rain forest. Thinning a boreal peat mosaic as if it were a Rockies fuel break does not make temperate forest. Calling a city tree-planting day a forest does not make a stand.
Get it right and the verb matches the climate.
Brazil's federal forest concessions are a tropical illustration, not a morality play. Fastmarkets: as of mid-2026, 27 active national concessions, about 1.6 million hectares, more than 3.2 million cubic metres of managed logs — mostly Amazon biome. Law 14.590/2023 let concession contracts include standing-forest carbon that used to sit mostly on restoration. Cousin public fact. A stacked vintage is still not the stand. The Amazon as a living system is already on the page at the forest that could flip — illustration, not a second pillar.
The Pacific Northwest and the Rockies are temperate illustrations: oceanic rain forest and mountain mixed conifer in the same FAO domain, different fire and snow. A marked timber sale is not the villain. Some of those stands are working forests; some are old structure people still argue about — see the redwood old-growth piece. Stay qualitative on remaining old growth. The type is still temperate.
Boreal is the fire-and-carbon clock: short growing season, needles, peat and permafrost at the edges, intervals that are not a southern pine year. Suppress every fire and you can still lose the stand that needed a mosaic. Let it run at the house line and you have handed the problem to the wildfire series. This post names the stock.
what you can actually hold
A finished inventory is a past-tense map. A living stand is a present-tense one, and it stays living only as long as someone funds the condition of that type on a named place.
That is the gap ensurance works in. An agent stands for a specific stock or place; a certificate funds that agent directly; a coin funds the category rather than the parcel. Downstream of a working forest — city, mill, water utility, forest program — can pay for stand condition instead of the failure.
Live doors: tropical-forests.ensurance, temperate-forests.ensurance, boreal-forests.ensurance. Coins that already exist, at small volume: deepforest, boreal forests, dryforests. We would rather say the volumes are small than invent a $FOREST that is not there.
The tropical forest, the temperate forest, and the boreal forest exist whether or not anyone buys a certificate. Naming the type is how the money finds the right stand.
