# the unit is the parcel

*most carbon assets are registry entries. in today's legal economy the thing you can hold is the natural asset*

Most carbon assets are registry entries. A tonne has a serial number, a vintage, a methodology, and a standard that can change the rules it lives under. A river confluence forest in the Appalachian and Allegheny interior has a boundary, a holder, a recorder or a customary authority that knows whose it is, and a forum where a dispute about it gets heard. One of these describes something the living thing did last year. The other is where the living thing is.

If you searched **carbon asset**, this post gives you the buyer's definition, then reads the same question through the law: in the economy we actually live in, which unit can you hold, encumber, and defend? The answer is the parcel, and it is the reason this protocol's instruments are sized to the natural asset rather than to any one metric it produces.

## what a carbon asset is

In the allocator's dialect, a **carbon asset** is one of three things. It is an issued unit on a registry, held in an account and eventually retired against a claim. It is a project's expected issuance, carried on a developer's books as future inventory. Or, in the newer funds, it is land itself, bought and held because of the carbon it stores or could be credited for.

All three are real positions, and the buyers of the first two fund real work on real ground. The first two are claims on a standard's rulebook. Their value depends on a methodology staying approved, a buffer pool holding, a baseline surviving review, and a buyer's claim remaining acceptable to that buyer's auditor. The third is the interesting one, because it has quietly admitted the point of this post. When a carbon fund buys the forest, it has stopped buying the metric and started buying the unit that makes it. It has also walked into the oldest problem in land: buying ground for carbon has displaced people where tenure was customary and unwritten, which is why any instrument on a parcel has to start with whoever actually holds it.

**the tonne is a registry entry. the parcel is where the living thing is.** In today's legal and geopolitical economy, the most natural unit for a living system is the one it already occupies and the one a court, a registry, or a community will recognize.

## four things you can hold

Put the units side by side, with the question a lawyer would ask about each.

| unit | issued or recognized by | what it proves | what you can do with it | is it the living thing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A tonne (carbon credit) | A standard's registry under its methodology | A verifier accepted an estimated reduction or removal inside a boundary for a period | Hold, transfer, retire against a claim | No |
| A thousand gallons (water certificate) | A verifier and registry under a volumetric accounting method | Water was returned to a source in need | Hold, retire against a water target | No |
| A habitat unit (biodiversity unit) | A statutory scheme, as in England since 2024 ([demand by statute](/guide/demand-by-statute?from=guide)), or a voluntary standard | A measured uplift in habitat condition secured for a term | Satisfy a planning condition or make a contribution claim | No |
| A parcel (natural asset) | A land registry, a recorder, or a customary authority, under property law | Who holds the land that makes all of the above, and where its lines are | Occupy, encumber, lease, grant an easement, pass on, defend | Closest: it holds the living thing, on lines drawn by law |

Read the last column. Three of the four are descriptions of what a parcel did, each under rules that a standards body or a ministry can revise. The fourth is where the parcel is. It exists under law that long predates any carbon methodology, and under customary tenure that predates the law. It has a holder you can name: a family, a company, a community, a public body. It has a boundary someone can walk. When something goes wrong on it, there is a forum.

That is what is meant by the most natural unit in today's legal and geopolitical economy. Not that title is sacred, and not that the deed is the forest. [What a natural asset actually is](/guide/what-a-natural-asset-actually-is?from=guide) is clear that the living system is the asset and the deed is one way of holding it. But among the units capital can actually hold, the parcel is the one that coincides with the living thing, and the only one every flow the living thing produces can be written against.

## why the metric cannot be the underlying

A tonne is not a bad unit. It is a good unit for the atmosphere, which is one pool, and a poor unit for a forest, which is one place. The habitat unit is honest about this: biodiversity schemes keep adding like-for-like rules and local trading zones because a marsh in one county is not a quantity of the same thing as a heath in another. There is no good biodiversity metric yet and a biodiversity unit is unlikely ever to net across places, which makes the parcel the honest unit for biodiversity before it is the honest unit for carbon. The water certificate is honest about it too, since the gallons are counted in a named source.

The moment a unit admits it is place-specific, it has admitted that the place is the underlying. And the law already lets the pieces of a place be severed from it: water rights, minerals, timber, grazing, and now carbon rights can each be split off and sold on their own. That is exactly what stacking does, and the previous post covers it. What the severed rights are severed *from* is the parcel. It is the one unit the rest hang off, and the only one that still carries every flow after the rights have been carved away.

## what the protocol does with this

The instruments here are sized to that unit, not to any metric it produces.

A **policy** is a [certificate](/specific?from=guide) on one titled natural asset with a cooperating holder. The claim is the parcel's present condition, and every flow the parcel produces, carbon included, is carried on that one instrument. Where land is held communally, customarily, or by the state, the holder is a community or a public body; a policy is written with them, and a **line**, a certificate on an agent with a mandate, funds the work where no single title exists: a public forest, a river across a hundred parcels, a watershed. Lines fund the mandate and invest in policy certificates inside it. If you cannot name the agent, it is a coin.

A certificate confers no title, no debt, and no share of anyone's land. It is not an offset and not an insurance policy. It is a hold on a named living condition, with an account that can receive and route funds for that place. The three honest ways to hold a whole natural asset, owning the deed and using it, holding the deed as security, or funding the place with an instrument and never taking title, are already written up in [three ways to hold a natural asset](/guide/three-ways-to-hold-a-natural-asset?from=guide), and this post will not retell them. Which hold fits, and what the certificate is under the law where you sit, is a question for your own counsel; nothing here is legal, tax, or investment advice, and nothing here is an offer.

On 21 October 2026 the [binder](/natural-assets?from=guide) holds nine parcels: seven valued, one quoted, one marked lost. Volumes are small. The unit is right, and it sits beside the easements, land trusts, and public budgets that already hold most of what is protected.

## the ladder

If you hold carbon assets now, the move is not to sell them. It is to add the underlying.

1. **Read one statement.** Pick a parcel in the binder and read its flows, carbon in context with water, pollination, habitat, and the rest. The [305-acre river confluence forest](/natural-assets/twin-rivers?from=guide) in the Appalachian and Allegheny interior is a good first read: condition 9, every flow on one page.
2. **Hold the condition, where a certificate exists.** A certificate on a parcel's agent holds the whole, and your carbon, water, or biodiversity payment can sit on top of it. The [1,729-acre forest](/natural-assets/lookout-mtn?from=guide) in the Blue Mountains has a live account page today; that page shows what, if anything, is open on it.
3. **Or hold the deed.** If the parcel is yours or could be, the policy is written with you, and the deed stays where the law already put it.

The [last post in the series](/guide/carbon-value-on-nine-parcels?from=guide) puts all nine statements on one table. The forest at the confluence was moving water and holding soil before anyone issued a unit against it. Ensurance funds that condition. It is not the forest.

## frequently asked questions

### what is a carbon asset?

A carbon asset is an issued carbon unit held on a registry, a project's expected future issuance, or land held for the carbon it stores. The first two are claims on a standard's rulebook. The third has already made the move this post describes: it stopped buying the metric and bought the parcel that makes it.

### why is the parcel the most natural unit for a living system?

Because it is the unit the living system already occupies and the unit law and custom already recognize, with a holder, a boundary, and a forum. A tonne, a gallon, and a habitat unit each describe one thing the parcel did under rules that can be revised, and each can be severed from the land. The parcel is what they are severed from, and it carries every flow at once.

### does a certificate of ensurance give me title to the parcel?

No. A certificate confers no title, no debt, and no share of anyone's land; it is not an offset and not an insurance policy. It is a hold on a named living condition. A policy requires a cooperating titleholder; a line funds a mandate where there is no single title. See the [investors page](/solutions/investors?from=guide&topic=one-metric), the [binder](/natural-assets?from=guide), or [tell us the parcel you depend on](/contact?from=guide&topic=one-metric).
