# the token is the holding. the rule is the product.

*superform's stock vaults on base held about $1.1m a day after launch, and the double-digit rates were reward campaigns. a certificate on a forest is not that collateral.*

Not from holding the token. On the night of 7 October 2026, Superform's stock vaults on Base, where the first borrow-and-redeploy strategy had been switched on the day before, showed rates of about 15–37% in its app. Those rates were Merkl reward campaigns, paid in USDC and in Superform's own token. They were not earned carry. Nvidia's vault share price, the number that moves when a strategy actually earns, was 1.000005. The other stock vaults sat at exactly 1. Together, the stock vaults on Base held about $1.1 million.

That is the answer, dated. The rest of this note is why the design still deserves a careful read, and why a certificate on a forest is not part of it.

A watershed keeps working whether or not anyone holds a certificate. [**Ensurance**](/?from=guide) gives that living system an account. DeFi is one set of tools that account can call. This series, which starts at [defi might just save refi](/guide/defi-might-just-save-refi?from=guide), sorts the tools that are real today from the ones that are not.

Superform's launch carries a sentence worth keeping, and the credit is theirs: the token is the holding; the product is the rule that puts the holding to work, and the holder does not manage the loan.

**a reward campaign is not a yield, and a certificate is not stock collateral.** A stock token earns nothing you can spend until a rule puts it to work, and on 7 October 2026 that rule had not yet moved Nvidia's share price. An account for a watershed has rules too, shorter ones, and a person confirms each move.

## what a tokenized stock is

A tokenized stock is a token on a blockchain that tracks the share of a listed company. Coinbase issues them on Base. NVDAc tracks Nvidia. Superform's stock vaults on Base also covered Google, SpaceX, Tesla, Apple, Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft. They are Regulation S securities for eligible non-U.S. persons. U.S. persons are excluded, from the token, from Aave's hub, and from Superform's vaults.

Hold one and you hold the stock's price. Dividends on the Coinbase token buy more shares inside the token. They are not paid out as cash. So the token by itself pays nothing you can spend. Any carry has to come from something done with it.

That something is a loan.

## the loop, plainly

On 25 September 2026, Aave opened its Equities Hub on Base. It accepts seven Coinbase stock tokens as collateral, and a borrower can draw USDC against them. The stocks are collateral only. You cannot borrow the stock itself.

On 6 October 2026, Superform turned on Earn Stocks on Base. The first live strategy was Nvidia. The loop runs in four steps:

1. The vault posts the Coinbase stock token as collateral on Aave's Equities Hub.
2. It borrows USDC against that collateral.
3. It deploys the USDC only when the expected return clears the cost of the borrow, the cost of execution, and a risk buffer. If the spread does not clear, it does not deploy.
4. SuperformOS, the company's rule layer, runs the loan-to-value, the repayment, the redemption, and the unwind.

Aave prices the stocks with Chainlink from Sunday 20:00 ET through Friday 20:00 ET. Over a weekend the price holds still, and the loan can only get worse by the interest it accrues.

The depositor hands over the stock and holds a vault share. The depositor never touches the collateral, the loan, or the unwind. That is the product. The token was already there. The rule is what is new.

## what a share price tells you

A vault share price starts at 1. When the strategy inside earns, the price rises, and every holder's share is worth more. When it loses, or fees outrun the carry, the price falls. That is earned carry, and it is the number to read first.

On the night of 7 October 2026, Nvidia's stock vault read 1.000005. The loop had just been switched on, and it had not shown up in the price. The other stock vaults read exactly 1. For contrast, Superform's flagship USDC vault on Ethereum, which lends and buys fixed rates and has a longer record, read 1.033 the same night.

The rate the app showed on the stock vaults is a different thing. A reward campaign is a sponsor paying holders in tokens to show up. Here the payout was in USDC and in Superform's sUP token, run through Merkl. The money in a campaign can be real. It is not the stock earning, and it is not the loop earning. It lasts as long as the sponsor pays.

Size matters too. A day after launch, the stock vaults on Base held about $1.1 million together. Nvidia's was the largest, at about $431,000. That is a launch, not a market.

None of this makes the design wrong. It makes the advertised rate the wrong thing to quote.

## why the sentence is worth keeping

Several shops in this market now say the same thing: putting an asset onchain was step one. The business is a rule that does something with the asset while someone holds it. Superform's sentence says it best, so the credit stays with them.

The shape fits more than stocks. An ensurance account is also a holding with rules around it. The difference is whom the rule answers to. Superform's rule takes the holder out of the loan. The rule on an ensurance account keeps a person on every move.

Today that rule is short. An account can propose a swap, or a USDC deposit or withdraw on an allowlist of four venues on Base. Each one arrives as a card. Nothing moves until a person confirms it. The account does not borrow. A vault share is not a certificate.

The watershed is why the account exists. The tools are what it can call. The longer argument for why a token is not the thing it names is the hub, [crypto that does something](/guide/crypto-that-does-something?from=guide).

## the honest limit

Aave lends against a stock token that already has three things: a custodian behind it, a price feed, and a market. A certificate on a forest has none of those on that desk.

| what the lender checks | coinbase stock token on aave's equities hub | certificate on a forest |
|---|---|---|
| A custodian behind the token | Yes | No |
| A price feed the lender reads | Chainlink, Sunday 20:00 ET to Friday 20:00 ET | None |
| A market on that desk | One of seven stocks accepted since 25 September 2026 | Not listed |
| Borrowing against it | USDC, collateral only | Not available |

Borrowing against our coins or certificates is not available.

## frequently asked

### do tokenized stocks earn yield?

Not by holding the token. A Coinbase stock token tracks the share price, and dividends buy more shares inside the token instead of paying cash. Carry has to come from a rule built on top, such as borrowing USDC against the token and deploying it when the spread clears. On the night of 7 October 2026, the 15–37% shown on Superform's stock vaults was a reward campaign, and Nvidia's vault share price was 1.000005.

### why are u.s. persons excluded?

Coinbase's stock tokens are Regulation S securities for eligible non-U.S. persons. Aave's Equities Hub uses the same gate, and so does Superform's Earn Stocks.

### can i borrow against an ensurance coin or certificate?

No. Borrowing against our coins or certificates is not available. A certificate has no custodian, no price feed, and no market on the desk that lends against stock tokens.
