# the reading on the account is the rule

*the page that shows the condition and the rule that would move money are the same row*

A reef, a creek, or a canopy already has a condition, whether or not a policy pays and whether or not an account exists. Parametric [**ensurance**](https://ensurance.app/?from=guide) is a rule that could move money set aside for that living system when a reading shows that place held a baseline, or that the condition improved. The rule is not the reef, the creek, or the canopy.

**Parametric funding** is the part of that picture where the money is already named for the place — set aside in the place's own name — and a later program would read the same dated row a steward, a lab, or a gauge already produces. Not a storm index paid to a claimant after the wind. Not a dashboard that invents a score. The funding rule and the condition row would be one object, so nobody maintains two versions of the same creek stage.

Program officers and parametric underwriters both know the failure mode: the file, the instrument, and the payment logic can disagree. The design is so the reading an account would show and the threshold a rule would check are not copied from each other by hand. That design is [proposed, not live](/guide/insurance-terms-pointed-earlier?from=guide) — same honesty as the insurance glossary's parametric row. Nothing ecological pays from a gauge today.

## one row, two jobs

The claim is the sentence about the place; the reading is what the place did on the ground. [A claim is not a reading](/guide/a-claim-is-not-a-reading?from=guide), and that post is worth reading before anyone signs a check.

Parametric funding adds a funding job to the same row, still in design. The number an account would show and the number a rule would read would be identical — not "about the same" in a slide deck, but the same dated result with the same six fields [MRV already expects](/guide/what-mrv-actually-is?from=guide). Measurement, reporting, and verification are three uses of one row; a funding rule would be a fourth use of that row, not a parallel spreadsheet.

That is what separates parametric ensurance from parametric **insurance** in the proposed mapping. Parametric insurance pays a pre-agreed amount to the named insured when the index trips — wind speed, rainfall, magnitude — with **basis risk** when the index and the loss on the ground diverge. The reef wind case is [its own post](/guide/the-wind-paid-the-reef-did-not?from=guide). Parametric funding, in the ensurance direction, would move money **into** the named living system's work because a baseline held, or because a reading improved, not only after a named peril. Speed after a storm is a real product. This series is the other clock: the condition the rest of the year.

| job | what it is | live today |
| --- | --- | --- |
| what the account would show | the same dated row — device name, result, unit, time, method, and place | the shape is decided; the public reading log is not on |
| what a later rule would read | the threshold or hold time written against that row | designed, not live — neither ecological path runs from a gauge |

## what an account can show today

An account is what a place holds in its own name — purpose, geography, and the record where claims and readings are meant to sit side by side. It is not the creek. It is where the creek's file lives.

Today, that hold is real in a limited sense. A place can be named. A purpose can be declared. A visitor can see where holdings, links, or geography do not match the declared purpose and place.

What is not live is the public reading log. There is no continuous feed on a page, no webhook that ingests your logger, no observation history a donor can scroll. You cannot post a gauge reading to a URL and watch it refresh. The public writer is off. The same limit [what MRV actually is](/guide/what-mrv-actually-is?from=guide) states for measurement today.

Do not call any of this a condition dashboard. Dashboards aggregate, smooth, and rank. The design here is narrower: one place, one row, labeled for what it is. If two sources disagree, both stay visible with their methods. There is no blended trust score, no probe-written price, and no automatic one-through-ten that replaces a person's judgment when readings conflict.

## parametric funding when the rule catches up

**Parametric funding**, in the proposed ensurance sense, is funding whose release logic is written against an indicator row — not against an adjuster's narrative and not against a wind knot reading that never measured coral cover.

A rule could later be a threshold a program checks or a judgment inside a written mandate when readings disagree; neither ecological path runs today.

The line on that row can be a baseline that held, or a reading that improved. Insurance's line is the loss: gone, or worse, and often too late for the season that could have kept the place. This page does not run either line.

In both shapes, the account is the anchor. The money set aside carries the place's name. The rule would read rows attached to that place, not a generic index three watersheds away. The stewardship miss to avoid is plain: money would have moved on a sentence while the gauge had not been read in years — not the insurance miss where wind paid and bleaching did not, which is basis risk on the policy side.

Again: designed, not live. [Insurance terms pointed earlier](/guide/insurance-terms-pointed-earlier?from=guide) lists parametric ensurance beside parametric insurance for exactly this reason.

## models keep their labels; sensors do not set prices

A radar retrieval, a lab sheet, and a field reading can all be rows. They are not the same kind of row. A model stays labeled as a model — useful, sometimes the only affordable view of a large canopy, still computed from other inputs. Collapsing them into one "condition score" would make the funding rule easier to market and harder to defend when a foundation auditor asks which instrument signed the payment.

A sensor does not write a price. A reading describes what happened at a place at a time. What anyone pays to protect that place — premium, grant, or parametric release — remains a human decision in a room with a mandate. The row informs the decision; it does not replace it. That separation is why parametric funding is not "automated nature finance" in the fantasy sense. It is automated **consistency**: the same row the steward trusts is the row the rule would read, when a rule exists.

## who this serves first

A **foundation** officer already lives between the sentence and the row. Grants move on narratives; outcomes teams want readings. Parametric funding, if it ever runs, is a way to tie the next amount set aside to readings the program already believes in. The door is a conversation that names the living system, the reading, the line, and whose money moves. [Foundations](/solutions/foundations?from=guide&topic=parametric-ensurance) that steward place-based work do not need a new acronym; they need the file to stop splitting the gauge from the rule.

An **insurer** or reinsurer reading parametric cover knows the speed product is live and the basis-risk conversation is live. The proposed ensurance side does not replace a wind policy on a reef. It asks what row would describe reef **condition** if money were set aside for the months when no storm trigger fires. The underwriter's skill — naming the index, the threshold, the payee — maps to naming the reading, the hold time, and the account that receives the work. Different asset, same discipline about not paying on a number nobody measured.

## taking action

Read the two posts this argument rests on — [a claim is not a reading](/guide/a-claim-is-not-a-reading?from=guide) and [what MRV actually is](/guide/what-mrv-actually-is?from=guide) — then send a note that names four things: the living system, the reading you already take, the line it would have to cross (or hold), and whose money would move. The form does not switch a program on. It helps the reply name the same row you would want on the account.

## frequently asked questions

### what is parametric funding?

In insurance, parametric structures pay when an index crosses a threshold. In the proposed ensurance sense, parametric funding is money set aside for a named living place whose release would read the same condition row stewards and instruments already produce — when a baseline holds, or when a reading shows the condition improved, while the place is still working. Designed, not live.

### is the reading visible on the account today?

The account can show purpose, place, and mismatches between what is declared and what is linked. A public, scrolling log of dated readings is not on. There is no endpoint to post a feed and no continuous refresh on a page.

### what is the difference between a claim and a reading?

A claim is what someone asserts about a place and what it does. A reading is one dated result with a unit, a method, and a place — what the place did on the ground. Funding logic should read the second, not the first alone.

### can the display itself move money?

No. Showing a row does not release funds. A rule would read the row when built and authorized; today neither ecological path pays from a gauge.
