# the protocol door stays open

*the app can say no. a contract on base stays on base*

Someone will use this in a way you dislike. A name you would not have approved. A project that treats the hillside as a costume. A competitor who wants the pipes and has no intention of sounding like us. The practical question, if you typed "permissionless protocol," is which parts anyone can touch and which parts this app still reviews.

The forest, the wetland, the herd, and the town that drinks from them already depend on each other, whether or not we like every organization that shows up. [**Ensurance**](/?from=guide) funds that living condition. It is not the forest, and it is not a club with a single key.

A permissionless protocol is one a stranger can use without asking the operator. This one is semi-permissioned. The free door is a review. The priced door is a contract on Base, with settings the factory owner can still change. There are two layers, and they do not have the same rules.

**the free door is a review. a contract that exists stays on the chain.**

## the app can say no

The application for a group is free. A person reads it. The question in the review is whether the namespace is aimed at funding a living system, or at helping the people who already do that work. A namespace that fights the purpose can be declined. That is the client. We run it. We can refuse to feature a collection. We can decline to put a name in the curated list.

That refusal is a real power, and it is a limited one. It governs what this app presents. It does not reach backward into a contract that has already been deployed, and it does not stop a wallet from holding a token that already exists. If you came here worried that "open" means "anything, with our logo on it," the review is the answer. If you came here worried that a refusal deletes someone from the chain, it does not.

## a permissionless door with a price

The other door has no review. You pay the contract, and the namespace is created with your wallet as the owner named in that transaction. On 7 October 2026 that price was 10 ETH, and the door was switched on. The create page reads the live price.

We cannot delete that contract from the website. That is the part that is permissionless once it exists. It is not the whole of the terms. The factory owner can change what the next namespace costs, turn the door off, and keep a list of names that cannot be registered. The factory also writes a royalty figure onto the new namespace. On 7 October 2026 that figure was 49.99%. This page does not say what that percentage is taken from. Read the namespace contract, including who can change the figure. Do not treat "your wallet is the owner" as "no other setting was written."

Tokens that already exist can be held by any wallet. An outside NFT can be given an account under the tokenbound pattern without asking us. Our app's approval of that collection is a separate gate, and the NFT series is the page for it. Featuring is ours. A deployed contract stays deployed.

Calling a public contract is not the same act as copying our methods or our data. The first is use. The second is the license, in the next section.

## what the 2025 dispatch offered, and what the license says

On 6 November 2025 we published a dispatch called "I Give Up." It offered three things: take the blueprint, join and be onboarded, or just look. We keep using the protocol ourselves. If you stay out, your organization is not a recipient. Best of luck with the path you prefer. The door remains where it was.

The fork line in that dispatch is not an offer this page repeats. The yield figures in that dispatch are not repeated here either.

The public legal page licenses the work under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0. As that page states it, written consent is required before you sell or monetize data, calculations, methods, or results derived from the work; before you use the work in paid valuation or other real estate or natural capital services; before you market property with information from the work; and before you create, mint, or sell environmental assets, including natural capital, carbon, biodiversity, ecological credits, or certificates, in any form, from the work. The same page says commercial use is allowed by ensurance protocol members, and that other commercial options are available on request. The page does not define member in that sentence. If you are unsure whether a use counts, treat commercial use of the methods as needing written consent. Do not treat this guide as the definition.

This series invites you to use the live protocol as a participant. A group, agents, coins, certificates, proceeds, beside the work you already do. Calling those contracts is participation. Copying the methods or the data into a separate mint is the license question above. This page does not grant that consent. If you want a written arrangement, ask for one. This page is not legal advice, and it is not a reading of your situation.

## more the merrier, at the size we actually are

Every additional group that funds a real place gives that place another way to be paid. It gives split recipients and certificate buyers another specific thing to point at. We benefit when the routing is used, because the field of addresses gets more honest. You benefit when the routing names you. The forest benefits when the money arrives as care for its condition. None of that requires you to shut your firm, take our name, or pretend we are the only instrument in your stack.

The merrier part has a limit you should say out loud. We are one book. Volumes are small. Most groups that could be here are not here yet. "More the merrier" is an invitation, not a description of a crowd. If your board needs a liquid market before it will touch an account, say no for now. The account will still be a good idea when you are ready, and it is a bad idea to describe today's book as that market.

Stay out and the living system remains. The three ways to stand, including what a quiet account can receive and what a certificate alone cannot, are on their own page. A contract you deployed remains deployed, with the settings written at creation. A certificate you hold is still a certificate. We do not need you exclusive.

The word itself, and who can own a word, is a different series. You do not have to take our spelling to use an account.

## frequently asked questions

### what does permissionless mean here?

A stranger can create a namespace by paying the contract, without our review. On 7 October 2026 that price was 10 ETH and the door was on. The app can still decline a free application and refuse to feature a collection. The factory owner can change the next price, turn the door off, and block names. A royalty figure is written onto the new namespace. On that date it was 49.99%. We cannot delete a contract that already exists.

### can i fork the code and sell my own certificates?

This page does not grant that. The legal page is CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. Written consent is required before you monetize data, calculations, methods, or results from the work, and before you mint environmental credits or certificates from the work, including carbon and biodiversity credits in any form. The page says commercial use is allowed by ensurance protocol members and does not define that term. If you are unsure, commercial use of the methods needs written consent. Using the live contracts is the invitation. Copying the work into a separate mint is not. This is not legal advice.

### what did the i give up dispatch offer?

On 6 November 2025 it offered three things: take the blueprint, join and be onboarded, or just look. We keep using the protocol ourselves. The fork line and the yield figures in that dispatch are not repeated here. The license page is the rule.

### what happens if i never join?

Your organization is not a recipient. The forest, the wetland, and the herd continue, and someone else may fund them. If you want an address later, the same two doors will be there: a free application we review, or the priced door the contract posts.

## next step

Read the [legal page](/legal) before you repeat the 2025 headline to a colleague. If you are ready for a namespace, start at [create a group](/groups/create?from=guide). If you want the written conversation — a membership question, a commercial request, a place you already fund — [tell us](/contact?from=guide&topic=open-protocol). Groups that already operate onchain can start from [onchain groups](/solutions/onchain-groups?from=guide&topic=open-protocol).
