# the place keeps the record

*claims, evidence, and mrv belong to the living system. they are not a login*

You searched for nature data because the plant, the warehouse, or the farm sits on a particular reach of water, a particular stand, a particular floodplain. A vendor sells the layer that shows it. The open question is what that picture belongs to.

A watershed, a forest, or a floodplain exists whether or not a dataset names it. The file can find that living system. The living system was there before the file.

:::johnson
**the file finds the place. it does not hold the place.**

A reading is not a product. No probe ships with a hold, and there is no live log to open.

## nature data names the living system you already depend on

**Nature data** is the set of maps and measurements that put a site next to water, cover, habitat, or heat. A flood boundary. A habitat line. A canopy figure. A summer temperature normal for that ground. The useful question under the download is simple: which living system does this facility actually touch?

We use location data internally when a place is being read for protection. Flood, habitat, canopy, and a summer temperature normal are among the public layers already in that work. They locate the watershed, the forest, or the floodplain. They support a judgment about that place.

We do not sell that data. Firms that sell the file are doing their job. [Ensurance](https://ensurance.app/?from=guide) funds the watershed, the forest, or the floodplain the file already found, and it keeps the record with that place.

## a place sentence is a claim

A **claim** is a sentence about the place. This floodplain is the buffer the warehouse depends on. This forest is the supply the mill cannot replace on a quarter's notice. This basin is what the town drinks.

The sentence can be plain. It states what the place is for, and who is willing to say so. It stays a sentence until something observed sits on the same ground. A claim that cannot be pointed at is still a claim. That status is useful. A risk officer, a credit team, or a procurement lead can see exactly what has been asserted, and exactly what has not yet been shown.

Treat the place sentence as the claim. Then ask for the evidence that belongs to the same ground.

How a promise becomes something an auditor can check is already written, in [ecological claims and MRV](https://ensurance.app/guide/ecological-claims-mrv?from=guide). This page is only about where the record lives. Claims, evidence, and MRV belong to the living system. They are not a login you buy beside it.

## evidence is a boundary, a coordinate, or a reading

**Evidence** is what you can point at on that place. Three forms cover almost every honest file.

A **boundary** is a line. The flood zone. The wetland edge. The habitat polygon. The watershed divide. If two analysts can open the same layer and find the same line, you have a boundary.

A **coordinate** is a point. The facility gate. The parcel corner. The stream gage. A headquarters, a country, and a sector code can hide the site. The coordinate puts the plant back on the ground it occupies.

A **reading** is a number taken there. Canopy on that stand. A water level at that gage. A summer temperature normal for that ground, drawn from a known window of summers, air and surface. A reading carries a place, a time, and a method.

| what you are holding | what to call it | what a reviewer can do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| a place sentence | a claim | ask what was asserted, and by whom |
| a boundary, a coordinate, or a reading | evidence | point at the same ground |
| a model output | a model | read the label before the number |

If you cannot point at it, keep the word claim. Calling a sentence evidence overstates what the people who sign can rely on.

## a model is labeled as a model

A flood model, a habitat model, or an estimated value can be the right tool for the decision in front of you. It remains a **model**. The label stays on the output, in the filename and in the sentence that introduces it.

A model that starts from a real boundary and estimates the rest is still a model. A summer temperature normal, computed for a stated window, is a reading of that window. A forecast introduced as if a gage had been read this morning is a model that lost its label.

Say which one is in the pack. A labeled model can inform a hold. An unlabeled model gets briefed as a site visit.

We do not sell MRV as a service. Measurement, reporting, and verification describe the condition of the living system you hold. They are the record of that place. The record comes with the hold.

## the record is on the place you hold

The reader who wanted a nature-data platform still gets a record, because the record is on the place they hold.

Hold the natural asset the file already named. The watershed, the stand, or the floodplain. The claim sits with that hold. The boundary, the coordinate, or the reading sits with that hold. Sensor intake is not switched on. The hold does not include a probe. There is no live observation log to open, and no continuous refresh waiting on a login. What you can stand on today is the place and the claim that names it. Flood, habitat, canopy, and a summer temperature normal are layers used inside that reading. They are not a dashboard on the public page.

## what to do with the place the file already found

A corporate desk that already pays for nature data can see the mill and the basin. An insurer can see the floodplain under the book. A capital provider can see the pin in the memorandum. The file's job is that sight. The next job is funding the living system the sight already named.

The corporations page lists monitoring among the work a company can fund. That line is not an observation log. Browse the [natural assets](https://ensurance.app/natural-assets?from=guide). Find the watershed, the forest, or the floodplain your file already points at. The hold is that place. The claim that names it stays with the hold. MRV is the name of that record. It is not a live feed, and it does not travel as a login.

If you want that record kept with the place, [write with the site and the living system it depends on](https://ensurance.app/contact?from=guide&topic=location-data). The note is sorted under location data. The work on the other side is a hold on that place, with its claims and its evidence: the watershed, the forest, or the floodplain the file already named.
