# the money you trust is already onchain

*dollars and euros from regulated issuers and banks already move on Base at any hour. a place can now hold an account and be paid in them.*

Picture a creek in the [Crystal River basin](/crystal-river.basin?from=guide) that holds snowmelt in its banks into late summer. The crew that keeps it that way, pulling thistle, fixing fence, logging the flow, works on a grant that pays on reimbursement: do the work, file the invoice, wait. The wire for last month's work leaves on a Friday afternoon and lands after the weekend. Meanwhile someone offered the land trust a donation in a coin nobody on staff knows how to spend.

If the word "crypto" makes you want to stop reading here, that is a reasonable instinct. A lot of people lost money on coins that promised much and were worth little. This post is not about those coins.

It is about the money you already count in. Dollars and euros, issued by regulated companies and banks, now move on public ledgers at any hour of any day. The creek keeps working whether or not anyone pays it, and the people who keep it are usually paid last and late. That can change, because the money people trust most can now reach the place directly.

**the money you already trust is moving onchain. now the place you depend on can be paid in it.**

On [*ensurance*](/?from=guide), a place can hold its own account, be paid in dollars or euros the day a certificate is bought, and keep routing that money to the work. The money is not the place, and the account is not the place.

## you do not have to believe in a coin

The test for whether something is real money is simple: would the institutions that already move your money touch it? Since 2023, they have. None of these companies is a partner of ours. They are evidence.

| who | what they did onchain |
|---|---|
| **Circle** | Issues USDC (dollars) and EURC (euros), which it describes as fully reserved and redeemable one for one. Native USDC launched on Base in September 2023, native EURC in July 2024. |
| **JPMorgan** | Its Kinexys unit piloted a US dollar deposit token on Base from June 2025, then made JPM Coin available to institutional clients for 24/7 transfers on Base in November 2025. |
| **Visa** | Lets US card issuers and acquirers settle with Visa in USDC. By April 2026 its stablecoin settlement supported nine networks, Base among them. |
| **Mastercard** | Announced onchain settlement options for issuers and acquirers using regulated stablecoins in June 2026, with Base among the listed networks. |
| **Shopify, with Stripe and Coinbase** | Let merchants accept USDC on Base from June 2025. By default Stripe converts it to local currency and pays the merchant's bank on the usual schedule, or the merchant keeps the USDC. |
| **Stripe** | Completed its acquisition of Bridge in February 2025. Bridge converts dollars to stablecoins and routes them to recipients, and businesses use it for stablecoin accounts. |

Read the list as one sentence. A bank, a card network and a commerce platform are already moving dollars on Base, and a second card network has announced settlement options there. That network is **Base**, and it is where *ensurance* runs today.

## is this crypto?

Honestly, in one sentence: it is a public ledger and a service, and the money on it is the same dollar or euro you already count in.

That needs one caveat, and it matters. A stablecoin is not cash in your hand. It is a claim on the company that issued it, backed by the reserves that issuer reports and redeemable under its terms, usually for verified business customers. Circle states that its tokens are not legal tender and not covered by deposit insurance. A deposit token like JPM Coin is different again: a claim on the bank. Knowing who owes you is the whole game, and [the next post](/guide/a-stablecoin-is-a-dollar-with-an-address?from=guide) takes it apart line by line.

What changes is not the unit. A crew paid in USDC is paid in dollars. A funder in Lyon paying in EURC pays in euros. What changes is that the money moves on a Sunday, to an address, with a receipt anyone can check.

## what that means for a place

A watershed has no bank account. Neither does a wetland, a pollinator corridor, or an aquifer held in common. Grant money and corporate invoices both assume a business day and a payee with a tax ID. Real money on a public ledger removes that assumption, which opens five things for the place.

**1. The place can hold an account.** On *ensurance*, a place can be represented by an [agent](/agents?from=guide): an account with its own address that can receive and hold dollars and euros. The stewards run it, and the people who do the work are paid by being named on the place's proceeds split. The account is not the place; it is how the place gets paid.

**2. It is paid when the work is bought.** A certificate for a place can be priced in any coin on Base, or ETH. USDC is the default, and EURC is a common choice. When someone buys it, the price settles to the account the certificate names, set to the place's agent, less any mint fee, in the same transaction. No reimbursement cycle.

**3. Proceeds keep moving.** Once money is in, it does not sit. The public [proceeds](/proceeds?from=guide) tree routes it through split contracts, into swappers that convert what they hold into steady currencies, and out through streams that run from three months to centuries. Anyone can trigger a split to distribute.

**4. Any coin can become steady money.** That donation in a coin nobody can spend can often be swapped into steady money. The [EURC swapper](/proceeds/0xb589c6363c74bfc6ed36b6acf31afbc6f5dd7761?from=guide) in the proceeds tree holds about two dozen different coins, among them coins named for boreal forests and for pollination, waiting to be converted into euros when a swap runs.

**5. A treasury can fund what it depends on.** A company that already holds USDC or EURC can buy a certificate for the river reach behind its intake in that same currency, and record it as a nature line.

The order stays fixed. Funding goes to the place first: securing the land, clearing what threatens it, restoring what was damaged. The people who keep it are paid from what the place is funded to do, through its proceeds split, and should be paid well for it. See [fund the land before the work it pays for](/guide/fund-the-land-before-the-work-it-pays-for?from=guide).

## what this does not do

A stable unit removes currency noise from a payment. It does not stabilize a river, and nothing here makes a forest pay a coupon ([the forest does not pay a coupon](/guide/the-forest-does-not-pay-a-coupon?from=guide)). Payment released on a milestone or a measured condition is [being wired now](/guide/what-parametric-ensurance-actually-does?from=guide), not live. Payouts from a team account are proposed by an admin and approved by the account's signers, so a person still says yes ([the account proposes, you confirm](/guide/the-account-proposes-you-confirm?from=guide)). Cashing out to a bank goes through an exchange or off-ramp where one serves your country, which is a separate service from the issuer's own redemption.

## frequently asked questions

### what are stablecoin payments for conservation?

**Stablecoin payments for conservation** are payments to a place, or to the people who keep it, in a dollar or euro token such as USDC or EURC, sent on a public ledger. On *ensurance*, a certificate for a place settles in its chosen currency, usually USDC or EURC, to the place's own account the day it is bought, and proceeds route on from there.

### is a stablecoin the same as a dollar in the bank?

No. A stablecoin is a claim on its issuer, backed by the reserves the issuer reports and redeemable under its terms. It is not legal tender and not an insured deposit. A bank balance is a claim on your bank. Both count in dollars; who owes you differs.

### does a land trust need to understand crypto to be paid this way?

No more than it needs to understand ACH. The place's agent holds the account. The app offers a card on-ramp to USDC through its wallet provider, and an exchange or off-ramp can move dollars back to a bank where one serves your country.

### does ensurance only work on Base?

Base is the network *ensurance* runs on today. Its accounts are built on a standard (ERC-6551) that works on most EVM networks, so the same account design can follow a currency to another network. That is a design property, not a claim that we operate there now.
