# the tonne is real and partial

*forest carbon counts a gas. the forest was already moving water, heat, and fire*

A standing forest is not waiting to become a climate asset. It is already moving water, cooling air, slowing wind, feeding soil, holding species, and changing how fire behaves.

Forest carbon is narrower. It is the carbon stored or kept out of the air by a forest pathway. Avoided conversion, reforestation, and natural forest management can all produce forest carbon claims when the accounting is good enough.

That number matters. It also leaves a lot outside the frame.

**a forest carbon credit is a receipt.** the forest was already doing the work.

Project Drawdown, The Nature Conservancy, and carbon protocols helped make a tonne legible. They gave buyers, governments, and project developers a way to compare actions that otherwise look local, messy, and slow. That work is useful. It is also a cousin to the living system, not the system itself.

The tonne records a change in greenhouse gas accounting. The forest changes climate in more ways than that.

## the receipt and the system

Griscom et al. described natural climate solutions as 20 conservation, restoration, and improved land management pathways across global forests, wetlands, grasslands, and agricultural lands. The paper estimated a maximum potential of 23.8 PgCO2e per year at a 2030 reference year, constrained by food security, fiber security, and biodiversity conservation. About half of that maximum, 11.3 PgCO2e per year, was cost-effective if the social cost of CO2 was at least $100 per MgCO2e by 2030.

Those are carbon numbers. They are not nothing. They are part of why forest carbon became fundable.

The same paper also names water filtration, flood buffering, soil health, biodiversity habitat, and enhanced climate resilience as co-benefits. Those benefits are not inside the tonne. They travel with the forest, wetland, grassland, coast, or working land when the pathway is real.

A buyer who only sees the tonne can miss the climate system that made the tonne possible.

### what is forest carbon?

Forest carbon is the carbon stored in, or kept out of the air by, a forest pathway.

It may come from avoiding forest conversion. It may come from reforestation. It may come from natural forest management. Other Griscom forest pathway names include improved plantations, avoided woodfuel harvest, and fire management. The paper’s twenty pathways are completed in the supplement, with wetlands, grasslands, and agricultural lands alongside forests.

Forest carbon is not the forest. It is one measurable climate output from a forest pathway.

That distinction matters for buyers. A carbon credit can be a valid receipt for a quantified claim. But receipts are not watersheds. Receipts do not shade streams. Receipts do not keep a forest floor damp before a hot wind arrives.

For the longer distinction, see [a carbon credit is not a forest](/guide/a-carbon-credit-is-not-a-forest). For the broader system argument, see [the climate control system already exists](/guide/climate-control-system-already-exists).

| what a tonne records | what a standing forest also does |
| --- | --- |
| A measured change in greenhouse gas emissions or removals. | Moves water through roots, soil, trunks, leaves, and air. |
| A boundary for carbon accounting. | Creates shade, roughness, humidity, and cooler local conditions. |
| A claim tied to a pathway such as avoided conversion, reforestation, or natural forest management. | Holds habitat structure, soil life, and migration space. |
| A time-bound accounting result. | Changes how floods, drought stress, erosion, and fire risk are felt nearby. |
| A unit that buyers can compare across projects. | Supplies local climate functions that are not interchangeable by spreadsheet. |

The contrast is not anti-carbon. It is pro-reality.

Carbon accounting asks a hard and useful question: what changed in the atmosphere, compared with a baseline? Forest climate function asks another question: what conditions does this living system maintain, and who depends on them?

New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection protects the Catskill and Delaware forests because the city drinks that unfiltered supply. Salesforce’s downtown San Francisco campus depends on Hetch Hetchy water from the Tuolumne, a forested Sierra supply. In both cases, forests are part of a water and climate control system before anyone turns them into a carbon line item.

### are natural climate solutions just carbon offsets?

No. Natural climate solutions are pathways. Offsets are one way some pathways get financed.

Recent nature-investment writing often treats natural climate solutions largely as carbon-credit and reforestation deals. That is understandable. Carbon credits are easier to buy than watershed integrity, cooler stream temperatures, or lower fire exposure. A tonne has a price, a registry field, and a buyer workflow.

But the pathway is larger than the claim.

Avoided Forest Conversion is a pathway. So is Reforestation. So is Coastal Wetland Restoration. So is Grazing—Optimal Intensity. The pathway describes an ecological and land-use change. A credit may finance part of it. It may also narrow attention to whatever can be counted as CO2e.

Project Drawdown helps people see climate actions as comparable solutions. The Nature Conservancy helped popularize natural climate solutions as a serious climate category. Carbon protocols help make claims testable enough for markets and compliance systems. They are cousins. They each make one part of the work legible.

ensurance starts from the living pathway. A forest, peatland, wetland, grassland, coast, or working land exists whether or not anyone buys a certificate. Funding should serve the pathway, not redefine the living thing around the receipt.

That is also why the biodiversity market is copying the carbon template so quickly. Measurement brings money closer. It also risks flattening what is being measured. See [the carbon template biodiversity is copying](/guide/the-carbon-template-biodiversity-is-copying).

### what does a tonne of co2 leave out?

A tonne of CO2 leaves out local cooling.

Trees cool through shade and evapotranspiration. Forests change roughness, humidity, and wind. A tonne can count carbon storage while missing whether a place becomes more livable during heat. For more on that, see [do trees cool the planet](/guide/do-trees-cool-the-planet).

A tonne leaves out water timing and quality.

Forests slow water, filter water, and shape snowmelt and runoff. Wet peatlands and inland wetlands hold water in ways that carbon math can understate or misread. For the peatland version of the same problem, see [a carbon credit is not a wet peatland](/guide/a-carbon-credit-is-not-a-wet-peatland).

A tonne leaves out fire conditions.

Fire is not only an emissions event. It is fuel, moisture, wind, access, ignition, culture, suppression history, and recovery. A forest pathway can improve carbon accounting and still need separate attention to fire behavior and community exposure.

A tonne leaves out dependency.

A company may depend on a forested watershed. A city may depend on an upstream landscape. A road, port, farm, or campus may depend on nearby cooling or flood buffering. None of that dependency becomes irrelevant because the carbon credit is sold somewhere else.

This is the honest answer to the claim that without a tonne, nothing is fundable: the tonne is a useful unit and a bad definition of the climate.

A buyer can fund what the tonne records. A buyer can also hold the pathway’s condition.

That means asking whether the forest is still standing, connected, regenerating, wet enough, cool enough, and managed in a way that keeps the climate function intact. It means asking what risk the pathway reduces, who depends on that reduction, and whether the funding reaches the work that maintains it.

Price can be a bridge. It is not the worth of the forest.

## what buyers can hold

If a buyer wants a simple carbon claim, the tonne is the unit. Use it carefully. Respect the protocols. Do not pretend the receipt is the forest.

If a buyer depends on the pathway, the question is different. The asset is not just avoided emissions. It is condition: canopy, soil, moisture, continuity, governance, and the work needed to keep those conditions from degrading.

That is where natural climate solutions become more than offset procurement. They become funding for the systems that keep places habitable.

For the full framing, start with [what natural climate solutions actually are](/guide/what-natural-climate-solutions-actually-are). For the funding side, see [how natural climate solutions get funded](/guide/how-natural-climate-solutions-get-funded).

Late in diligence, a buyer can ask for a pathway hold rather than only a carbon receipt. For a temperate forest pathway, that can start with the [temperate forests agent](/temperate-forests.ensurance?from=guide). If the pathway needs to be specified with a place, condition, and funding intent, use the co-create door: [create a pathway hold](/specific/create?mode=suggest&agent=temperate-forests.ensurance&name=pathway%20hold&from=guide).

The receipt is useful. The living system is the point.
