# stablecoins got you onchain. they are not why you stay.

*the on-ramp is nearly complete. the reason the rails exist is an asset that cannot exist offchain*

Institutional onchain finance so far is stablecoins, payments and wrappers. About US$293 billion of stablecoins. About US$16 billion of tokenized Treasuries. Tokenized stocks, tokenized credit, tokenized gold. Every one of them is an asset you already owned offchain, moved onto faster rails. Same risk, same return, better settlement.

**Institutional onchain finance** is the use of public blockchains by banks, asset managers, funds and treasuries to issue, hold, settle and distribute assets. Its first decade has been an on-ramp, and the on-ramp is nearly complete. The watersheds, forests, soils and reefs under every holding keep working whether or not anyone titles them. [*Ensurance*](/general?from=guide) is how an allocator can fund one of them at a named place, on those same rails. It is not the place, and it is not a wrapper.

**the rails were not built to carry the old book faster.** — They were built so that assets and structures that cannot exist offchain can exist at all. A stablecoin quotes the price. The river sets the limit.

## the on-ramp, by the numbers

| what moved onchain | scale | what it is |
|---|---|---|
| stablecoins | about US$293 billion ([DefiLlama, 4 Nov 2026](https://defillama.com/stablecoins)) | a dollar with an address |
| tokenized US Treasuries | about US$16 billion ([rwa.xyz via Insights4VC, July 2026](https://insights4vc.substack.com/p/the-state-of-onchain-real-world-assets)) | a T-bill with an address |
| tokenized real world assets, ex stablecoins | about US$39 billion ([rwa.xyz via Stobox, October 2026](https://www.stobox.io/blog/stobox-october-2026-recap-rwa-market-sigma-rome)) | Treasuries, credit, gold, stocks, a little property |

Read the right-hand column. Each line is a thing that already existed, with a custodian, a transfer agent and a price, given a token so it settles in seconds instead of days. That is real progress and it is why the rails are now institutional: the chain [ensurance](/manual/overview?from=guide) runs on carries Coinbase custody, tokenized equities and billions of dollars of lending, public facts about the chain that imply no relationship with this protocol. What it is not is a new asset. [A stablecoin is a dollar with an address](/guide/a-stablecoin-is-a-dollar-with-an-address?from=guide), and a dollar with an address is still a dollar.

## what the rails are for

Five things the rails exist for that no custodian, transfer agent or wire can do:

1. **A watershed with its own wallet and mandate.** An account addressed to a place, people or purpose, that can hold, receive and deploy. No custodian issues accounts to rivers.
2. **An instrument that takes any ticket size and pays a named place directly.** A certificate minted in USDC to the account configured for that place, at the same unit price for a sovereign fund and a student.
3. **Accounts that buy what they depend on and are bought by what depends on them.** The dependency graph as the market, in both directions, from inside. [Every account has two lists](/guide/every-account-has-two-lists?from=guide) explains the mechanism.
4. **Proceeds that route along that graph without a servicer.** Splits, streams and swappers that compose into routes and pay the parcel first.
5. **Collateral and vault structures that compose on top of all of it.** Not yet for nature; the rails that do it for Treasuries and credit are the same rails.

None of that can be done with a custodian, a transfer agent and a wire. Nature is the first asset class this protocol built on these rails from the outset rather than wrapped onto them; earlier ReFi work on carbon showed the direction and tokenized a credit, not the living system. [DeFi and RWA, combined from the start](/guide/defi-and-rwa-combined-from-the-start?from=guide) makes the design argument; this post makes the allocation one. If your onchain strategy ends at a dollar that settles faster, you have paid for the rails and skipped the reason they exist.

## built for agents on both sides

The accounts on this protocol are run by AI under caps their owners set. Each agent reads its place, proposes trades, parks cash, buys what it depends on and runs approved programs under caps its owner sets. BASIN builds and operates the protocol the same way, a founder and a fleet of agents, which is how a founder-led shop carries 2,095 accounts, over a thousand published guide entries and a 43-tool MCP server, as read on 5 November 2026. [Every agent got a wallet. The earth didn't](/guide/every-agent-got-a-wallet-the-earth-didnt?from=guide) tells that story; [the account proposes, you confirm](/guide/the-account-proposes-you-confirm?from=guide) shows the verbs.

The demand side is AI too. Data centers run on water, power and land, and so do the models inside them. An AI agent can read this post, quote a certificate over MCP and sign it from its own wallet under the caps its owner set. The API is public and the live read, including machine calls, is at `/api/protocol/stats`. The house rule is plain: the technology is named where it matters and never sold as a badge. This is a public ledger and a service, run by people and their agents, for the places under everything.

## what this changes for an allocator

The decision is no longer whether to hold onchain assets; many desks already hold a stablecoin or a tokenized bill. The decision is whether the onchain book stays a mirror of the offchain one. A mirror is cheaper settlement. The reason the rails exist is a position you could never hold before: the living system under every other line. [Long the source](/guide/long-the-source?from=guide) sets out that position, and [four things your committee will say](/guide/four-things-your-committee-will-say?from=guide) answers what the desk will ask first.

This is research, not investment advice. The market is pre-seed and the series says so in plain numbers.

## frequently asked

### what is institutional onchain finance?

Institutional onchain finance is the use of public blockchains by regulated financial institutions to issue, hold, settle and distribute assets. Its first wave is stablecoins and tokenized versions of existing securities; its second is assets and structures that only exist onchain.

### is institutional onchain finance just stablecoins?

Today, mostly. Stablecoins are about US$293 billion and tokenized Treasuries about US$16 billion, and both are wrappers of assets that already existed. The next category is an underlying that has never had a custodian or a price: the living systems every other asset depends on.

### what can you do onchain that you cannot do offchain?

Give a place an account that can hold and deploy. Issue an instrument that pays that account directly at any ticket size. Let accounts buy what they depend on and be bought by what depends on them. Route proceeds along that graph without a servicer. Compose collateral and vault structures on top. None of it works with a custodian and a wire.
