sonoran, mojave, chihuahuan, and great basin are not the same desert

rain in summer, rain in winter, or almost none — same rule: keep the dryland living

The saguaro stops before the Joshua tree starts. At seventy-five miles an hour the country in between reads as one continuous brown nothing — which is roughly how a lot of planning treats it, too.

Both are deserts. They are not the same desert, and the difference is not scenery. It is when the water arrives and how cold the winter gets.

sonoran desert vs mojave: the short answer

The Sonoran Desert gets rain twice a year — winter fronts off the Pacific and a summer monsoon — and it rarely freezes hard. That combination is what lets it carry trees and columnar cacti: saguaro, palo verde, ironwood, organ pipe. The Mojave gets mostly winter rain, less of it, and colder nights — the eastern Mojave also takes a real share of summer monsoon. That is why it carries Joshua tree, creosote, blackbrush, and wide bare ground between the plants.

Everything else follows from those two facts. Look at what each one grows.

That is Sonoran upland — saguaro at forest density on a bajada, cholla and brittlebush underneath, snow on the range above. The snow matters. The freeze line on those slopes is one of the things that decides how high saguaro can climb.

That is Mojave — one Joshua tree, a shrub matrix of creosote and blackbrush, granite, and bare interspaces you could park in. Neither photo is a degraded version of the other. They are two working systems with different water years.

when the water arrives is the whole distinction

The four North American deserts differ less in how much rain falls than in when it falls and how cold the winter gets. That is the mechanism. A plant does not experience an annual precipitation average; it experiences whether there is moisture in the soil when its roots are active, and whether a hard freeze arrives before it has set seed.

Three consequences fall out of it:

  • Summer rain buys growth forms. Warm-season moisture is what supports columnar cacti, leguminous desert trees, and a deep summer flora. Winter-only rain supports shrubs, winter annuals, and the occasional spring bloom that gets a name on the news.
  • Freeze sets the ceiling. Hard, sustained frost is the northern and upper boundary for saguaro, organ pipe, and most of the Sonoran's subtropical element. Push north or up and the same rainfall stops producing the same desert.
  • Elevation does the same job as latitude. The Chihuahuan sits mostly above 3,500 feet and the Great Basin mostly above 4,000, so both get freezing winters despite being far inland. The Great Basin is a cold desert — most of its water arrives as winter snow.

Forrest Shreve was drawing these boundaries by vegetation rather than by rainfall totals as early as the 1940s, and the modern ecoregion maps from EPA and WWF still cut the country close to where he cut it.

The Chihuahuan is the largest of the four and the Mojave the smallest. The Chihuahuan also carries more cactus species than any other desert in the Americas, which is why WWF's ecoregional assessment ranks it among the most biologically diverse deserts on Earth. If you have been told "the desert" is a single low-diversity place, that ranking is the correction.

Great Basin shrub-steppe is where "desert" and grassland get argued honestly, and the grassland side of that argument lives in what grasslands actually are and sagebrush takes decades. The soil surface that holds the top inch of all four — cyanobacteria, lichens, mosses — is a desert job with its own piece: the crust that holds the desert together.

the fifth one: baja california's fog desert

The peninsula's Pacific side is the type most people have never been told is a type. The cold California Current pushes fog inland over the Vizcaíno, and in places the fog delivers more usable moisture than the rain does. That is why the cover there looks like nowhere else in North America: cirio or boojum (Fouquieria columnaris), cardón (Pachycereus pringlei), blue fan palm, and epiphytic lichen hanging on plants in country with almost no measurable rainfall.

Fog is water, and it is not on the rain gauge. A siting or restoration plan written off precipitation records alone will read that place as drier and emptier than it is.

The fog deserts of coastal Peru and Chile — the lomas, the Atacama — run on the same physics and belong to a different continent and a different post. This one stays in North America.

even the tortoise splits at the river

If you want one animal that settles the argument, take the desert tortoise. The population west and north of the Colorado River, the Mojave animal, was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1990. The animal east and south of the river turned out not to be the same species at all: in 2011 it was described separately as Gopherus morafkai, the Sonoran desert tortoise, with different behavior to match a different desert — shelter on rocky slopes rather than burrows in valley soils, timed to summer rain rather than a winter-fed spring.

Same genus, one river — and the behavior on each bank matches the desert it lives in. The Mojave tortoise also occupies California's Colorado Desert, a Sonoran subdivision west of the river; the river is the barrier, the desert shapes the animal. That is why a habitat plan, a translocation protocol, or a solar siting study written for "the desert" can be calibrated to the wrong animal on one side of the water. Whether the array itself counts as the desert is a separate question, handled in a solar pad is not a desert.

Creosote bush does the mirror-image trick: Larrea tridentata grows in the Sonoran, the Mojave, and the Chihuahuan, and some Mojave clonal rings are estimated to have been alive for something on the order of ten thousand years. Creosote is what the warm deserts share. What they do not share is everything the creosote grows next to.

the people who named these deserts

The type boundaries are not new information, and they are not ours. "Mojave" carries the name of the Mojave people; "Sonoran" carries the name of Sonora. The Tohono O'odham year begins with the saguaro fruit harvest, which is to say the calendar itself is keyed to the biseasonal rainfall that makes the Sonoran the Sonoran — a description the Tohono O'odham Nation gives far better than we can. In the Great Basin, Numu and Newe families have worked a piñon harvest keyed to the pinyon-juniper belt upslope of the sagebrush. In Death Valley, homeland was returned to the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe by federal act in 2000.

For a land steward or an agency planner, the practical version is simple: the nations who live in a desert type usually know its water year, its fire history, and its harvest clock in more detail than any dataset holds, and they are parties rather than sources.

the invasion is type-specific too

Generic "desert weed control" fails for the same reason generic desert restoration fails.

In the Sonoran, the problem grass is buffelgrass (Cenchrus ciliaris), introduced from Africa for forage. It fills the bare interspaces that historically kept fire from carrying at all, and Sonoran plants are largely not fire-adapted — saguaro and palo verde do not resprout. The National Park Service treats it at Saguaro National Park as a fire-regime problem, not a weed problem.

In the Great Basin, the analogous grass is cheatgrass, and it has already reset the fire interval across enormous country. That is a fire-cycle story with its own post: cheatgrass is a fire cycle.

In the Chihuahuan, the conversion runs the other direction — woody shrubs into desert grassland — and the long record at the Jornada Experimental Range is the reason anyone can say that with confidence.

Three deserts, three mechanisms, three different right answers. A plan that says "remove invasive grasses and revegetate" has not yet said anything.

the clock is type-specific too

This is the part that matters if you are writing a mitigation plan, a habitat conservation plan, or a restoration scope of work.

None of those clocks fit a two-year grant, and none of them are interchangeable. Which is the whole argument: name the type before you name the fix. A palette that works on a Chihuahuan grassland site is wrong on a Mojave bajada, and a monitoring window sized for a grass stand is a rounding error against a saguaro.

The spine under all of this is the same one from what deserts actually are: a desert is a living dryland, not empty land. The four types tell you which living dryland, and therefore what it costs to keep it in condition and how long that condition takes to rebuild if it goes.

That is what our own stage is organized around — named places rather than a generic desert line item:

Each of those is an agent: an account that can hold funds and route proceeds to the place it names. Volumes on them are small today, and saying otherwise would be the same error as calling a solar pad a desert. What they do is make the unit of funding a type of dryland in a named place instead of "desert conservation" as a category.

The type differs. The job does not. Keep the dryland living, on the clock that dryland actually runs on.
