# parametric insurance vs parametric ensurance

*same kind of indicator. the check leaves after the event, or the money stays with the place.*

Parametric insurance and **parametric ensurance** put the same kind of indicator in the name. Parametric insurance pays today. Parametric ensurance is designed, not live.

A reef, a creek, or a canopy already has a condition, whether or not a policy pays and whether or not an account exists. Parametric ensurance is a rule that could move money set aside for that living system when a reading shows that place held a baseline, or that the condition improved. The rule is not the reef, the creek, or the canopy.

Parametric insurance pays today, a pre-agreed amount to a claimant, when an index crosses a line, without an adjuster. It pays because something is gone or has degraded, and by then it is often too late for the condition itself. Parametric ensurance is designed, not live. It would move money set aside for a named living place when that place holds a baseline, or when a reading shows it improved, while the place is still working.

## parametric insurance vs parametric ensurance

| | parametric insurance | parametric ensurance |
|---|---|---|
| what trips | A measured index, such as wind, rain, or earthquake magnitude, crosses a stated line. | A reading of the place's own condition would have to cross a line someone already watches. |
| when the money moves | After the event. The contract pays without waiting for a loss report. | It would move while the place is still working, because a baseline held or a reading improved. Designed, not live. |
| who receives it | The claimant named in the contract. | The work of the living place the money was set aside for. No claimant is paid for a loss. |
| which way the condition moves | The cover pays when something is gone, or when it has degraded. By the time that index trips, the season that could have kept the place is often already over. | The rule can pay when the place holds a baseline, or when a reading shows it improved. The money would arrive while there is still a living system to fund. Designed, not live. |
| what the index is allowed to miss | The damage on the ground. Payment can follow a light loss, or fail to arrive after a heavy one. | Anything the chosen reading does not record. A correct gauge would still be one record of the place. |
| what is live today | Policies in force. Cover pays when the index crosses the line. | Designed, not live. No program moves money because a condition reading crossed a line. |

## holds, or gets better

Insurance, including a parametric policy, pays because something failed. The house is gone, the reef is broken, the crop is short, or the wind says the damage is likely. The check can be fast. It is still for the aftermath. By the time it arrives, the season that could have kept the living system is often already over.

Parametric ensurance, still only a design, could pay the other way. A rule can release money because a reading held a baseline the place already had: cover that stayed, a stage that stayed in its band, a count that did not fall. It can also release money because the reading improved: more cover, a clearer creek, a stand that thickened. Both are a design. Neither runs today. The direction is the point. Pay for a place that is still here and still able to get better, not only for a place that is already gone.

**insurance pays today. the other name is a drawing.** A storm index can send a pre-agreed amount to a claimant within days. Money for what a reef, a creek, or a canopy is doing in a quiet month would stay with that living system, and that rule is not in force.

What the second name means, in full, is [what parametric ensurance actually does](/guide/what-parametric-ensurance-actually-does?from=guide).

What an index is allowed to miss is basis risk, and it is the product working as written.

A dry-season plate on a creek, or spring fuel moisture under a canopy, is an illustration of the condition an event index was not written to settle, and neither illustration pays.

## who the money is for

A parametric policy pays the claimant named in the contract. That claimant may be a firm, a ministry, a utility, a household, or a fund, and the fund may spend the payment on repair. The contract is finished when the pre-agreed amount arrives. The rest of the year sits outside the term.

Parametric ensurance would dedicate the money to the place before any reading moves. When a reading shows that reef, creek, or canopy held a baseline, or that the condition improved, funds set aside for it would move into its work while the place is still working. There is no price on this page, and nothing here is for sale. The direction is the whole proposal: the money stays with the place instead of leaving as a check after the event.

In August 2026, Hurricane Lala crossed the wind line on a Hawaii reef policy, and the cover paid its $200,000 minimum. [The wind paid. The reef did not file the claim](/guide/the-wind-paid-the-reef-did-not?from=guide).

## what is live today

Parametric insurance is bought, renewed, and paid. A schedule written for a reef, a mangrove, a wetland, or a forest still pays after an index, inside a limit, for a term. Arranging the money before the storm is a real achievement of the people who build those programs. The money can still be money for after the storm. An insurance-linked security changes who holds the capital and still pays after a defined event. Speed without an adjuster is the service. Keep it when that is the job.

The other column is a proposal. In the insurance vocabulary, this use of parametric is marked proposed: funds would move into a place's work when an indicator says it is time. This page uses that mark and does not upgrade it. A note sent from here does not switch a program on, and it does not invoice.

Were a rule of that kind ever operating, it would read one dated row: the method or the device, the unit, the place, and the time. An account is what a place holds in its own name. The account would show that row, and the rule would read the same row. The row is not on a public page. There is no condition dashboard and no score. A sensor does not write a price. Until that row is public, a condition rule has nothing honest to read. A sentence someone writes about the place, and a reading of what the place did, are different things. Measurement, reporting, and verification are three uses of one reading. Those distinctions already have their own pages, linked below, and this one stops at the funding consequence.

## you can hold both

Keep the wind policy. It pays a claimant after an index, at a speed loss adjustment cannot match. [Solutions for insurers](/solutions/insurers?from=guide&topic=parametric-ensurance) is the door for a desk that already writes that cover and wants the condition beside it in the same conversation. This page does not add a product to the policy.

If the design is ever built, it would fund a condition the index is allowed to miss, while the place is still working. A wind policy keeps its job in a quiet month. A quiet-month reading is not a claim payment. A foundation that already funds restoration, and that has helped buy a parametric policy on the same coast or the same watershed, is holding the two instruments apart. The policy answers the storm. The grant answers the work. The drawing is a way the work could one day follow a reading the foundation already trusts. A lender, a board, or a regulator can still require cover after a loss. The design does not stand in for that cover.

## name the condition the index skips

Keep the wind policy. Then name the condition it does not cover: the living system, the reading you already take, the line that reading would have to cross, and whose money would move. The note puts the comparison in your facts. It does not turn the design into a program.

## frequently asked questions

### what is the difference between parametric insurance and parametric ensurance?

Parametric insurance pays today, a pre-agreed amount to a claimant, when an index crosses a line, without an adjuster. It pays because something is gone or has degraded, and by then it is often too late for the condition itself. Parametric ensurance is designed, not live. It would move money set aside for a named living place when that place holds a baseline, or when a reading shows it improved, while the place is still working.

### can you hold both?

Yes. Keep the wind policy for the payment after an index. A condition rule, if one is ever built, would fund the living system that index is allowed to miss, while the place is still working. The reef, the creek, or the canopy is the subject of both.

### is parametric ensurance live?

It is designed, not live. No program moves money because a reading of a reef, a creek, or a canopy crossed a line. Parametric insurance is the instrument that pays today.

### does a nature-based policy already do this?

A nature-based policy can name a reef, a mangrove, or a watershed, and a fund can spend the payment on repair. The payment still follows an index after the event, inside a limit, for a term. Money for the condition while the place is working is the other design, and that design is not in force.
