# fund the dependency from the treasury you already hold

*your treasury may already hold dollars or euros on a public ledger. the place your operation depends on can be paid in them, and the line goes in the report.*

Your treasury team may already keep part of the company's cash as dollars or euros on a public ledger. Your sustainability team has already written down which river, aquifer or forest the operation depends on. Those two files rarely meet.

Picture a food plant that draws water in the [Colorado River basin](/colorado-river.basin?from=guide). The snowpack, the river and the riparian forest along it keep working whether or not anyone pays them, and the people who keep them are usually paid last and late. The money companies trust most, dollars and euros issued by regulated firms and banks, now moves on public ledgers at any hour. **[ensurance](/?from=guide)** gives a place like that river an account that can receive that money directly and keep routing it to the work. The money is not the river, and the account is not the river. The account is how the river gets paid.

This post is for the treasurer and the sustainability lead in the same room. It names the offer, the unit, and what we will not promise.

**the dependency is already in your disclosure. the currency may already be in your treasury.** — a certificate for the named place settles in USDC or EURC to that place's account, and gives you one line to report.

## a corporate stablecoin treasury is already real money

A **corporate stablecoin treasury** is the part of a company's cash held as dollar or euro tokens on a public network, issued by a regulated firm or a bank, and used to pay and settle at any hour. It sits beside bank deposits. It does not replace treasury policy, counterparty limits or the audit trail.

Three instruments matter on Base, the public network ensurance runs on. Say which is which, because your compliance officer will:

| instrument | what it is | who you are owed by |
|---|---|---|
| USDC | a dollar stablecoin issued by Circle, described by Circle as fully reserved and redeemable 1:1 | Circle, under its terms |
| EURC | a euro stablecoin; in the EU, issued by Circle France under MiCA; native on Base since July 2024 | Circle France, under its terms |
| JPM Coin (JPMD) | a deposit token from JPMorgan's Kinexys, available to institutional clients for 24/7 transfers on Base since November 2025 | the bank |

None of these is legal tender, and Circle states its tokens are not covered by deposit insurance. A stablecoin is a claim on its issuer. A deposit token is a claim on a bank. Is this crypto? It is a public ledger and a service, and these are dollar and euro units your treasury can already count, each a claim on its issuer.

## the dependency is already in the file

If your company has done TNFD or water-risk work, you have a list of places the operation cannot run without: an intake, a source watershed, a flood buffer upstream of a warehouse. We wrote about that list in [every company depends on places it does not own](/guide/every-company-depends-on-places-it-does-not-own?from=guide), and about why naming it is not the same as funding it in [a disclosure is not a transaction](/guide/a-disclosure-is-not-a-transaction?from=guide).

The gap is mechanical. The dependency is described in a report. The money sits in a treasury account. Nothing connects the two.

Your treasury already holds the currency. Name the place it depends on.

## how to fund nature-related dependencies with stablecoins

This is the offer. It follows the supply chain resilience and facility protection use cases on our [corporations page](/solutions/corporations?from=guide&topic=real-money-onchain): fund the natural infrastructure your business depends on, through a certificate for that place, with monitoring you can report.

| | what it is |
|---|---|
| **buyer** | a company or fund whose operation depends on one named place, holding USDC, EURC or another coin on Base |
| **exposure** | the dependency named in your TNFD or water-risk work: an intake, a source watershed, a flood buffer |
| **solution** | a [certificate](/specific?from=guide) for that place: a policy where the land is titled, a line where it is not |
| **currency** | priced in USDC or EURC for most treasuries, though a certificate can be priced in any coin on Base, or ETH; the sale settles to the account the certificate names, set to the place's agent |
| **work funded** | land secured, riparian and forest work, monitoring |
| **unit** | per certificate, and the acres of the named place it covers, reported as one nature line |
| **door** | [contact us with the place](/contact?from=guide&topic=real-money-onchain), or [browse certificates](/specific?from=guide) |

### step by step

1. **Name the place.** Take it from your own disclosure. If the place already has an agent and a certificate on [specific ensurance](/specific?from=guide), you can start there. If not, we structure one with the people who keep the land.
2. **Choose the currency.** A certificate on ensurance can be priced in any coin on Base, or ETH. USDC is the default, and EURC is the euro choice. A European treasury can pay in euros without a conversion step. JPM Coin is offered only to JPMorgan's institutional clients, so in practice a holder pays in USDC or EURC.
3. **Buy the certificate.** The price goes to the account the certificate names, which is set to the place's agent, less any mint fee, in the same transaction as the purchase. No net-60, no wire waiting for Monday.
4. **The work gets paid.** The place's proceeds split pays the groups and the people named on it, and nothing changes without a person confirming it. Where a shared team account holds it, an admin proposes each payout and the account's signers approve it. The public record shows what arrived and what left.
5. **Report the line.** One certificate, one named place, its acres, the currency and the transaction. Our services for corporations include ecosystem service accounting and MRV and monitoring, which help document that line. The disclosure is still yours to write.

## idle dollars before they are allocated

Treasurers ask what happens to dollars that sit in an ensurance account before they are spent on a certificate. USDC held in an ensurance account can be placed in a listed USDC vault on Base, from a closed allowlist, and withdrawn again. Each move is proposed and confirmed like any other action. It is optional, and vault risk (the contract and the curator) is yours.

That is cash management. A vault share is not a certificate, it funds no work on the land, and it is not why you are doing this. We quote no rate and promise nothing about it.

## risk framing for the fiduciary

A certificate is not an investment product. The forest does not pay a coupon, and we explain why in [the forest does not pay a coupon](/guide/the-forest-does-not-pay-a-coupon?from=guide). What you are buying is funding for a place your operation depends on, settled in a currency you already hold, with a record you can audit.

The risks are real and nameable:

- **Issuer risk.** Your claim is on Circle or on the bank, under their terms, and redemption is usually for eligible, verified customers. A stablecoin can be frozen by its issuer or limited by law.
- **Place risk.** Funding the land does not guarantee the river. Drought, fire and upstream decisions still happen. The point is that the people keeping it are paid before the loss, not after.
- **Execution risk.** Payouts depend on the place's split naming the right recipients and its stewards doing their job. That is why the record is public.

Nothing here is an insurance contract or a guarantee, and nothing pays you back. Say that plainly in the memo.

## frequently asked questions

### how do we fund nature-related dependencies with stablecoins?

Name the place from your TNFD or water-risk work, buy a certificate for it priced in USDC or EURC, and the sale settles to the place's account in the same transaction. Report it as one nature line: the certificate, the place and its acres.

### what is a corporate stablecoin treasury?

Cash a company holds as dollar or euro tokens on a public network, issued by a regulated firm or bank, such as USDC, EURC or a bank deposit token like JPM Coin. It is still a claim on the issuer, not legal tender or an insured deposit.

### can we pay with a bank deposit token?

Not directly today. Certificates can be priced in any coin on Base; USDC and EURC are the steady choices. A holder of JPM Coin or another deposit token settles in one of those.

### is a certificate an investment?

No. It pays for a named place and the work that keeps it. It carries no coupon and no promise of resale value.

### does this replace our nature disclosure?

No. Your TNFD or water-risk report stays yours. It gives the report something to point to: a funded line for a named dependency, with a public record of the payment.

Bring the place. [Talk through the dependency](/contact?from=guide&topic=real-money-onchain), [browse certificates](/specific?from=guide), or read [how ensurance works for corporations](/solutions/corporations?from=guide&topic=real-money-onchain).
