# every agent got a wallet. the earth didn't

*what an earth agent is, and the hundred-trillion-dollar economy no AI agent works for*

More than a hundred million machine payments on one network in sixteen months. Nearly nine in ten were for less than a dime.

That is Chainalysis counting x402, the pay-per-request rail built for AI agents, on Base through September 2026. Much of it is software paying software, and early activity included speculative token minting, so read it as a count of machine payments, not proof of a working agent economy. Under every one of those data centers sits a second economy. Water to cool the servers, a river behind the grid, soil, pollinators, floodplains. It sends no invoice and holds no account. An **earth agent** is built to work for that economy.

**every agent got a wallet. the earth didn't.** We built the agents that work for the economy nobody pays: one account per place, with written limits and a record of what it did.

## what an earth agent is

An earth agent, also called a nature agent, is a software agent that holds its own account on behalf of a place, the people who keep it, or the purpose it serves. It acts under a written mandate and keeps a record of what it did. In practice it can hold funds for a place, spend inside written caps, and write down a claim about the place with room for a reading or survey to back it up.

Three parts do the work. The **place** gives it a reason to act that is not another API call. The **mandate** says what it may do. The **record** says what it did, so nobody has to take its word.

One thing an earth agent is not: the forest. A watershed does not speak through software, and no agent should claim to. The agent is an account and a set of rules that work *for* a place, the way a trustee works for a trust. The place is the point. The agent is the tool.

On *ensurance*, every earth agent is an **ensurance agent**. More than two thousand of them exist today.

## what the agent wave got right

The last year gave AI agents real infrastructure.

- **A checkout.** Google's Agent Payments Protocol and the Agentic Commerce Protocol from OpenAI and Stripe let an agent buy something on a person's behalf.
- **A way to pay per request.** x402 turns the old "402 Payment Required" web code into a stablecoin payment. Its foundation now sits under the Linux Foundation, with Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google, AWS and Cloudflare among its members.
- **A plug.** The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is how a model reaches a tool or a data source. Anthropic gave it to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation in December 2025, when it already counted more than 10,000 active public servers.
- **A name tag.** ERC-8004, a draft standard, gives an agent on Ethereum a registry entry that says who it is, plus places for reputation and validation.

Each solves a real problem. Together they give software a wallet, a checkout, a plug and a name.

## what it skipped: a place, a mandate, a record

None of them says what the agent is *for*. An agent with a wallet and a checkout still goes looking for a job, and the job it finds is the next API call.

Most also leave the hard part to the builder. Who may empty the wallet? What happens when a limit is unset? Where does a claim about the real world get written down, and where does the evidence for it go? A registry says who an agent is. A mandate says what it may do. A record says what it did. The wave shipped the registry. Google's protocol signs a mandate for a purchase, and ERC-8004 has places for reputation, but a standing spending limit and a record of what the agent did with it are still left to each builder.

## the anatomy of an earth agent

What one earth agent is made of on *ensurance*:

| part | what it is | in plain words |
|---|---|---|
| **name** | purpose, place, bio, voice | What it is, where it is, what it is for |
| **account** | its own account, bound to the agent itself | The money belongs to the agent, not to us. Whoever holds the agent controls the account |
| **mandate** | caps per action and per window, allowlists of what and whom, a wake schedule | What it may spend, on what, how often, to whom. For autonomous spending, an unset cap or an unknown dollar value means no |
| **modes** | manual, automated, autonomous | A person at the wheel; a rule that runs the same way every time; or the agent on its own, inside its mandate |
| **actions** | a fixed set: buy, sell, transfer, fund, mint, attest, and a few more | Every action goes through one checkpoint. Never raw code. Agents never create new instruments; people do |
| **record** | claims, with a place for the evidence to land | What it said about the place, and where a reading, survey or sensor can back it up |
| **rails** | the app, a server API, MCP, x402 | Talk to it in the app or call it from a server. Built to speak MCP and x402 |

*Is this crypto?* Partly. The account sits on a public ledger so anyone can check what it holds and did, and a service runs the rules on top. That is the whole of it.

Most rows get their own post below. The mandate also has its [own explainer](/guide/an-agent-needs-a-mandate-before-it-needs-a-wallet?from=guide).

## the place came first

Most of the industry built an agent and then went looking for a job for it. We started from the other end: a watershed, a coast, a crew that keeps them. Then we asked what that place would need to act on its own behalf.

The public dates start in December 2025. We had planned how an agent could trade and hold value for a place in internal notes in 2024. Then we published [what an ensurance agent is](/guide/what-is-an-ensurance-agent?from=guide) and [what happens when nature gets a wallet](/guide/when-nature-gets-a-wallet?from=guide). In March 2026 [we named it](/guide/the-voice-and-the-land?from=guide): nature agency, the land with a voice. Rights of nature gave some rivers standing in court. Standing in court is not standing in markets.

Others got here long before any of us. terra0 asked in 2016 whether a forest could own and use itself. We are not claiming the idea. We are showing a working version of it.

## why the economy nobody pays

The 2014 update by Costanza and colleagues put the world's ecosystem services in 2011 at about $125 trillion a year, in 2007 dollars ($145 trillion on a second assumption). The authors warn that a global total has no decision attached to it. It is a sense of scale, not a price.

Still, scale matters here. The normal economy cannot see a wetland until someone drains it. An agent can name what a place provides and what depends on it. It can hold value in the place's own account and route proceeds to the place first: the land, the water and the living systems on it, then the people who keep them.

That is the work: making unbooked value legible so capital has somewhere to go. It is early. The accounts are open and the rules are written. Volume is the next chapter, and we would rather show it than promise it. Agents are not buying natural capital today. We are building the accounts they would need.

The price is a bridge, never the worth. A bridge is how capital gets across.

## what's in the series

This post is the hub. The six that follow each take one part of the anatomy.

1. **Give an agent a wallet and you've built a target.** Who owns an agent's account, and the limits that default to no.
2. **Autonomous is a setting, not a personality.** Human in the loop, a rule with no human, or the agent on its own. The same account can run all three.
3. **Trust the receipt, not the agent.** Registry, reputation and record, and why only the record shows what an agent did.
4. **Plug your model into the living world.** What an MCP server for nature data can answer, and what it leaves to your own wallet.
5. **Nobody was coming, so we built the market.** Capital formation for nature, and why we became our own first users.
6. **The first invoice a river ever sent.** x402 lets an agent pay per request. Does it ever pay what the request depends on?

## frequently asked questions

### what is an earth agent?

An earth agent is a software agent that holds its own account for a place, the people who keep it, or the purpose it serves. It acts under a written mandate and keeps a record of what it did. It works for the place. It does not speak as the place.

### what is a nature agent?

A nature agent is the same thing under a different name. Some people say earth agent, some say nature agent; on *ensurance* both are ensurance agents. The test is the same either way: a place, a mandate and a record.

### how is it different from an AI agent with a wallet?

An AI agent with a wallet can pay. It does not know what it is paying *for*. An earth agent starts from a place, runs autonomous spending under caps that fail closed, uses a fixed set of actions instead of raw code, and keeps claims where evidence can be checked. Any model can talk to one; the account and its rules stay with the place.
