# defi might just save refi

*the ticker wave stalled. the pipes kept shipping. a watershed with an account can call them.*

ReFi is short for [regenerative finance](/guide/living-money?from=guide), and the word has carried two different things. The first is a crypto movement that started around 2021: carbon credits bridged onto a chain, pooled into tokens, held in treasuries, traded in pools. The second is an older practice, regenerative economics, which asks that money leave the living systems it depends on better off than it found them. The movement borrowed the practice's name and built itself on DeFi pipes. The practice was there before the tokens and is still there now.

A watershed keeps working whether or not anyone holds a certificate. [**Ensurance**](/?from=guide) gives that living system an account. DeFi is one set of tools that account can call.

That is the whole argument of this series in three sentences, and this note is the hub. The ticker wave of ReFi stalled; the number is below, dated. The pipes it was built on did not stall. They kept shipping, and a watershed with an account can call them, one confirmed action at a time.

If you typed refi because you held one of those tokens, or built one, this is not a eulogy. If you typed it because you steward land and someone told you crypto could fund it, this is the page that says what is true today and what is not.

**defi might just save refi.**

The movement ran on DeFi pipes and got ahead of its market. The practice underneath never needed a ticker, and a living system with an account can use the pipes without becoming one.

## two layers under one word

Start with the loud layer, because it is the one most people mean.

Starting around 2021, builders put carbon credits onchain. Toucan built a bridge that retired a registry credit and minted a token in its place, then pooled those tokens so they could trade as one asset. KlimaDAO built a treasury that bought those pooled tonnes and held them. Regen Network built its own registry and issued credits from it. Gitcoin ran matching rounds that routed small donations to open-source and climate projects. Each of those was a real piece of work. Most of them leaned on the same plumbing the rest of DeFi uses: liquidity pools, bridges, vaults, and a stablecoin to price everything in.

Now the quiet layer. Regenerative economics is the practice of designing money and markets so the living system is the subject, not the collateral. Thinkers such as John Fullerton and Kate Raworth wrote it down years before anyone minted a token, and their starting point was the living systems an economy depends on and the people inside them. The third note in this series stays with them.

Held side by side, the contrast is the point. The movement was fast, priced every minute, and lived or died on a ticker. The practice is slow, starts from the watershed, and does not care what the chart did today. ReFi the movement wanted to be the practice with a token attached. What it built, and what still works, is a set of pipes made for forests: a bridge, pools, a treasury, a registry. The part that stalled was the market for what flowed through them.

## the ticker wave stalled

[The State of ReFi Report 2025](https://carboncopy.news/content/assets/The%20State%20of%20ReFi%20Report%202025.pdf), published by CARBON Copy, put the stall in one number. Onchain ecological credits turned out to be easier to issue than to sell: by the report's 2025 count, about 12% of the credits brought onchain had been retired (used against a claim and taken out of circulation), against about 61% in the voluntary carbon market as a whole. The same report lists builders that shipped and later wound down, Solid World, Coorest, and Thallo among them; the next note credits what they built. The plain thing is the market: demand for the credits went quiet, and the tokens that priced them went quiet with it.

That stall is not proof that the idea was wrong. It is a sign that a ticker is a poor place to keep a practice. When the only way to measure regeneration is a price, the price becomes the product, and a price without buyers is a number on a flat chart.

The next two notes take this apart properly. [The pipes outlived the tickers](/guide/the-pipes-outlived-the-tickers?from=guide) goes project by project through what each one built and what happened to it, with the volume rows dated. [The practice under the ticker](/guide/the-practice-under-the-ticker?from=guide) goes back to the economists and asks what regenerative meant before anyone minted it.

## the pipes kept shipping

Here is what did not stall. The general-purpose pools still clear. The bridges still move assets between chains. USDC vaults on Base still take deposits and give them back. Lending markets kept adding to what they will lend against; on 25 September 2026, Aave opened an Equities Hub on Base that takes seven Coinbase tokenized stocks as collateral. Most of that general plumbing was not built for forests, and none of it cares what flows through it. That indifference is why the carbon tokens could be built on top of it so quickly. It is also why a pipe cannot keep a forest at the center by itself; that job belongs to whoever holds the account.

A pipe is not a purpose. The useful question was never whether DeFi works. It does. The question is who the account at the end of the pipe answers to. The pipe cannot tell whether the name on the label is a river or a ticker, and the page that draws that line is [crypto that does something is not a ticker](/guide/crypto-that-does-something?from=guide). This series does not retell it.

## the practice with an account

Ensurance is the practice side of ReFi, given an account.

A living system gets a named account and a mandate. [colorado-river.basin](/colorado-river.basin?from=guide) is one: a place agent whose own description names 246,000 square miles, seven states and Mexico, and water for 40 million people. The account exists to serve that system. Whoever holds an account like this answers to the place, not to a chart, and the place is the member everyone else stands beside. That is what belonging means here. You are not buying ReFi. You are standing with a watershed that has an address. Money that reaches an account like this is meant for the people and the work that keep the watershed working; the pipes only hold and move it in between.

An account like this can call the pipes. That names the calls, not anything colorado-river.basin holds. Today the calls are two. It can propose a swap, routed through 0x on Base. It can propose a USDC deposit or withdrawal on an allowlist of four venues: Steakhouse high yield USDC, Steakhouse prime USDC, Gauntlet USDC prime, and Aave USDC. In each case a card appears with the action written out, and nothing moves until a person confirms it. The protocol's own wallet is refused. A vault share is not a certificate. Borrowing against a coin or a certificate is not available, and this series will not pretend otherwise.

That is a shorter list than the 2021 movement promised, and it is meant to be. The movement put the forest on the ticker. The practice keeps the forest off the table and lets the account use ordinary pipes for ordinary money. No rate is promised. No agent acts on its own. The watershed is the reason the account exists, and a person is the reason anything moves.

## what this series does not say

It does not say the ReFi builders failed. They built bridges, treasuries, registries, and funding rounds, and some of those still run.

It does not say ecosystem health moves a rate, or that a certificate is collateral, or that a coin is backed by a forest. Money here is based on a living system. It is not backed by one. That one word is the reason the forest stays whole.

It does not promise what an account will hold. It says what an account can call, and who has to say yes first.

## frequently asked

### what is refi?

ReFi is short for regenerative finance. It names two things: a crypto movement, mostly 2021 to 2023, that put carbon credits and other ecological assets onchain using DeFi tools, and the older practice of regenerative economics, which designs money so the living systems it depends on are left better off. The movement borrowed the practice's name. The practice does not need a token.

### did refi fail?

The credit market went quiet. The State of ReFi Report 2025 found about 12% of onchain credits had been retired against about 61% in the voluntary market, and several projects closed. The pipes those projects used did not fail; they kept running and kept adding features through 2026. The idea underneath, that money should serve a living system, did not fail either. It predates the tokens.

### what can a watershed's account actually do with defi today?

An ensurance account can propose a swap through 0x on Base, or a USDC deposit or withdrawal on an allowlist of four venues. A person reviews a card and confirms. Nothing moves otherwise. It cannot borrow against a coin or a certificate, and no rate is promised.

## next step

If you want the practice before the tokens, read [living money](/guide/living-money?from=guide): what regenerative finance meant, and why "based on" is the word that keeps nature off the table. If you steward land and want to know how an account sits beside your work, start from [land stewards](/solutions/land-stewards?from=guide&topic=defi-saves-refi). The next note in the series is the pipes.
