# defi and rwa, combined from the start

*most rwa wraps an asset after it exists, then looks for defi. ensurance started with the living one and the finance together*

DeFi RWA is a real world asset put to work inside decentralized finance. A Treasury bill, a private credit loan, a gold bar, or a share of stock is represented by a token, and that token is deposited in a vault, traded in a pool, or posted to a lender as collateral. The real world asset supplies the value. DeFi supplies the motion.

Almost always the asset came first and the finance arrived later. That order works for paper, not for a living system.

A forest, a wetland, or a watershed keeps working whether or not anyone tokenizes it, and nearly every asset on the RWA list leans on a living system like it. [**Ensurance**](/?from=guide) puts onchain finance and that living foundation into one design from the first line, so money can fund the place: based on it, never backed by it.

**rwa wraps an asset after the fact. ensurance started with the living one.**

The usual build adds a wrapper, a custodian, a price feed, a token, and then DeFi, each on top of the last. Here the place, its account, its instruments, and where the money goes were drawn together, and the place is never what a DeFi lender can sell.

[see a place with its own account →](/colorado-river.basin?from=guide)
:::

Five protocol words follow. An **agent** holds a mandate for a place, a group of people, or a purpose. Its **account** is an onchain wallet of its own. A **coin** is general ensurance, a tradable token that funds protection broadly. A **certificate** is specific ensurance, tied one to one to a single agent. **Proceeds** are what an instrument raises, routed by rule.

## how rwa gets built today

Each layer is added after the one before it exists.

1. **The asset exists offchain.** A Treasury bill, a loan book, a bar, a share. It was there before any chain.
2. **A legal wrapper.** A fund, a trust, or a special purpose vehicle issues a claim on the asset and says what the holder is owed.
3. **A custodian.** A regulated party holds the asset, so the claim points at something real.
4. **A price feed.** An oracle reports what the asset is worth, so contracts can read it.
5. **A token.** The claim is minted on a chain and can move at any hour.
6. **A DeFi integration.** A vault accepts it, a pool lists it, a lender takes it as collateral.

Coinbase's tokenized stocks on Base show the layers. The shares already existed. Coinbase Onchain SPV Ltd, a company in Abu Dhabi Global Market, issues the tokens under a prospectus; they are offered under Regulation S, not to U.S. persons. Alpaca Securities holds the underlying shares. Chainlink feeds report the price. The tokens went live on Base on 24 and 25 August 2026. Spot pools opened with the launch. On 25 September 2026, Aave opened an Equities Hub that takes seven of them as collateral. Five layers, then the lending.

That is real progress, and its builders deserve credit. The token trades outside market hours, though minting and redeeming stay with authorized participants. For paper, a wrapper does its job. The case that a receipt is not a canopy is made in [a token is not a forest](/guide/a-token-is-not-a-forest?from=guide). This post is about the order of the layers.

## bolted on after the fact

Look at where DeFi enters: last. The asset, the wrapper, and the custody were built offchain, for another purpose, before anyone asked what a vault or a lender would need. Some stacks design the token and its feed for DeFi from the start, and Coinbase's did, but the asset underneath still came first. That is why so much RWA work is integration work: which lender lists which token, which oracle a vault curator trusts.

For a T-bill, that is fine. Nothing about the bill changes when it is posted.

Point the same sequence at a forest and it breaks twice. The wrapper has no reason to care whether the forest still works; it was built to move a claim. And the last step usually means collateral, which a lender can sell if the loan fails. The next post takes that second break apart.

## built in from the start

Ensurance began from both ends at once.

1. **The natural asset is the subject.** A watershed, a forest, a species, a process. It is the reason everything else exists, and never the thing sold.
2. **An agent account holds the mandate.** A named account for a place, people, or a purpose. [colorado-river.basin](/colorado-river.basin?from=guide) is one, for the river. An account name gives no legal standing and no power over anyone's land or water.
3. **Instruments direct capital.** [Coins](/general?from=guide) trade on Base and fund protection broadly. [Certificates](/specific?from=guide) mint one to one to an agent and fund its mandate.
4. **Proceeds route money by rule.** By rule, toward the place first, and then to the people who keep it.

DeFi is not a step at the end of that list. It is the ground steps two through four stand on: the account is onchain, the instruments are tokens, the routing follows a rule. The tools an account can call came later, and are listed below. A watershed's account can reach a few DeFi rails, within a short allowlist.

No wrapper turns the forest into a claim, no one custodies the forest, and no price feed exists for a lender to liquidate it against. A certificate funds an agent's mandate. It is not title to land or a receipt for a tree.

"Combined from the outset" is a design claim. It describes how the parts were drawn, not how large they are.

## bolted on vs built in

| | usual rwa build | ensurance |
|---|---|---|
| what comes first | An asset that already exists offchain | The natural asset, as the subject |
| what the token is | A claim on that asset, held by a custodian | A coin or a certificate that directs money to an agent's mandate |
| where defi enters | Last, after the wrapper, custodian, feed, and token | At the start: the account and the instruments are onchain from day one |
| what the money funds | Exposure to the asset, or a loan against it | The place first, then the people who keep it |
| what sits on the defi collateral table | The token, so a lender can sell it if the loan fails | Not the place. Borrowing against a coin or certificate is not available |

## what is live, and what is not

Live today, on Base:

- Coins (ERC-20) trade on Base. The in-app swap fee is 1%.
- Certificates (ERC-1155) mint one to one to an agent.
- Every agent has its own onchain account (ERC-6551, a token-bound account).
- From its chat, an account can propose a swap routed through 0x, or a USDC deposit or withdrawal on exactly four allowlisted USDC venues (two Steakhouse vaults, a Gauntlet vault, and Aave), named in the linked post. Each proposal is a card, and nothing moves in chat until a person confirms it. An owner can also switch on a program, set in advance with caps, that runs a capped action on a schedule, and can stop it.

Not live:

- Borrowing against a coin or a certificate. It is not available.
- No lender lists our coins or certificates as collateral.
- No oracle prices a certificate for a lender.

The order is a deep pool and a funded exchange floor first. The floor, a standing offer by the protocol to take a certificate back for a fixed amount of its own token (not a dollar price), is built, not funded, and switched off.

A vault share is not a certificate: USDC in those venues earns what DeFi borrowers pay, not anything from the place. Holding a tokenized stock is not protecting a forest. What an account can call, card by card, is in [the account proposes. you confirm.](/guide/the-account-proposes-you-confirm?from=guide)

## why the order matters

A bond is finished the day it is issued. A living system is never finished, and nearly every real world asset leans on a living system. So the finance cannot be a wrapper fitted afterward. It has to be drawn around the place from the start, with the place as the subject and never pledged to a DeFi lender.

## frequently asked

### what is defi rwa?

DeFi RWA is the use of tokenized real world assets, such as Treasury bills, private credit, gold, or stocks, inside decentralized finance: deposited in vaults, traded in pools, or posted as collateral. The token carries an offchain claim into DeFi.

### how do rwas work in defi?

An offchain asset gets a legal wrapper, a custodian, and a price feed. Then a token is minted, and DeFi protocols integrate it as a deposit, a trading pair, or collateral. DeFi usually comes last.

### was ensurance built as an rwa protocol?

Not in the usual sense. Ensurance did not tokenize an existing asset and then look for DeFi. It began with the living system as the subject and an onchain account for it. It is based on nature, never backed by it: no coin or certificate can be redeemed into, or liquidated as, the forest. Borrowing against either is not available.
