An erosion credit — or the sediment, stormwater, or load-reduction unit sold next to it — is a receipt. Someone measured a practice, issued a unit, and sold you the right to count it. That receipt can be honest. It is still not living cover.
If you buy units because a permit, an ESG book, or a basin TMDL asked for a number, this page is the distinction. What the credit is. What it is not. When to keep it. When to hold the slope.
what buyers are actually holding
Markets already trade cousins of this idea. Bay programs buy sediment and nutrient reductions. Municipal stormwater programs buy or require stormwater credits. Some registries will sell a soil or erosion-adjacent practice as a stacked add-on to carbon or biodiversity. The names move. The object is stable: a unit of claimed reduction, not a root in the ground you can walk.
That is the same grammar as a biodiversity credit and a water credit. A water credit is still an allocation. A biodiversity credit is a receipt for a unit, not a hold on the living system. Those essays already live there. An erosion credit is the retention-shaped version of the same trap.
four objects, four failure modes
| Object | What you hold | Honest use | Failure mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Erosion / sediment credit | A unit of claimed load reduction | When proceeds actually build cover on a place you can name | The unit is the hold |
| Water credit | An allocation or conserved volume | When it funds a wet acre, not only a ledger | Accounting without a restored cycle |
| Silt fence / BMP contract | Temporary perimeter control | A pad that must not bleed this season | Closeout with no living cover |
| Living cover on a named place | Roots, crust, floodplain, funded condition | Every year rain and wind return | Only if you stop funding it |
Some credit projects do plant cover, reconnect a bench, or retire a plow line. The failure is not "credits are a scam." The failure is function and place: the unit can move, stack, and retire while the slope that writes your turbidity bill is still bare. A credit that funds a different county is a real receipt for a different hold.
Stormwater credits are often about runoff volume and peak, not soil staying put. They can overlap when a vegetated practice does both. They are still a permit instrument. What erosion control actually is is the living service those instruments point at.
the service exists without the registry
Living cover holds the land whether or not anyone buys a certificate or a credit. That is the foundation sentence again. Ensurance is how a beneficiary funds the condition — a certificate, when one exists, tied 1:1 to an agent for a place or a flow. erosion-control.ensurance is that flow agent (token #27). There is no minted certificate on it yet. There is no $SEDIMENT coin. If a pitch says otherwise, it is ahead of the product.
Price is a bridge. A credit price is a price of a unit. A certificate price, later, would be a price of funding a condition. Neither is the worth of the soil. Borrelli-scale tonnes measure the leak. They do not value the ground.
frequently asked questions
what is an erosion credit?
An erosion credit is a tradable receipt for a claimed reduction in soil loss or sediment load. It is a ledger object. Living cover is the service the ledger is trying to count.
is an erosion credit the same as a stormwater or sediment credit?
Often they sit in the same conversation and sometimes on the same registry. Stormwater credits usually buy volume or peak-flow reduction. Sediment credits buy load. None of them are the roots. Read the protocol: what was measured, where, and whether the place that threatens you is the place that got the money.
does buying a credit keep soil on the land?
Only if the money actually builds or keeps cover on the acres that would have eroded — and keeps paying after the vintage year. Buying a unit without a place is buying a story about soil, not soil retention.
keep the credit if it funds a hold
If your counsel wants a retired unit, buy a unit that you can trace to cover. If you want the service that protects your intake or your field, hold the place — or the flow agent that exists to fund that condition.
/specific is the certificate shelf. erosion-control.ensurance is the flow door, early — no minted certificate on this agent yet. Specific ensurance is the shelf for certificates that already exist on other agents. Who pays is where the bill already sits. The silt-fence cousin is not the hold either.
