# AI for nature starts with the place

*the river and the forest exist whether or not the model runs*

A river, a forest, a fishery, or the ground someone already keeps is already there. It stays there if the model is switched off. AI for nature is a reading of that living thing, for the person who keeps it.

The person who holds the title, or the group that stewards ground it does not own, may want that reading. The river does not need the model. The person who loves the river might.

**AI for good is a tool pointed at a living thing someone already keeps.** It is not a promise that the model will save the climate.

## the place is the subject

The phrase people type is defined in [what AI for good actually is](/guide/what-ai-for-good-actually-is?from=guide). This page stays on the living thing.

A **natural asset** is a named living system you can point at. A creek reach. A stand of trees. A wet meadow. A run of fish. [what a natural asset actually is](/guide/what-a-natural-asset-actually-is) keeps that definition on the thing itself.

**Natural capital** is the ledger written about that thing: which stocks are standing, which flows they perform, and what condition they are in. [what natural capital actually is](/guide/what-natural-capital-actually-is) is that ledger. The ledger lets other people see the system. The creek is still the creek.

Someone already keeps the place. A landowner knows which bank cut in the last high water. A land steward knows which planting held through the dry month and which one washed. That knowledge is older than any model, and it still governs. A model earns its place when the knowledge has to travel — to a neighbor upstream, to a town on the same slope, to a person who can fund the care — in a form those people can read.

The unit is one place. A river, a forest, a fishery, and the ground a culture already keeps exist whether or not anyone runs a model. A theme with the word nature in it has no bank, no neighbor, and no keeper.

A brochure and a doom story can both skip the living system under the visit — [the destination is a living product](/guide/the-destination-is-a-living-product).

## what a model can help you see

Point the tool at one parcel and ask four questions. Keep every answer on that parcel.

Picture a creek parcel under a forested slope, with a town road along the bottom of the draw.

**Condition** is how the place is doing right now. The bank is cutting, or the bank is holding. The wetland at the toe of the slope is wet in August, or it is dry. Condition is a description a person can check on a walk. The walk still governs.

**Stocks** are the standing systems on the parcel. Our reading sorts them into 15 kinds, including rivers and lakes, inland wetlands, temperate forest, grassland, shrubland, and open ground. The full set is on the [stocks](/natural-capital/stocks?from=guide) page. On this creek parcel the stocks that matter first are the river, the forest on the slope, and the wetland. A name from that list is a filing label. The cottonwoods are still the cottonwoods.

**Flows** are what those stocks do for the place and for the places tied to it. Our reading uses 19 flows, including clean water, habitat, food, healthy soils, and Risk Resilience — the capacity of a place to take a hit and still stand. The full set is on the [flows](/natural-capital/flows?from=guide) page. On this parcel the forest and the wetland slow water before it reaches the road. The forest and the wetland are still doing the work.

**Dependence** is which other parcels this place needs, and which places need it. The creek drinks from the slope above it. The road, and the people who use the road, depend on whether that slope and this wetland still hold. The reading lists those ties in both directions. The person who already walks the fence remains the keeper.

| reading | a careful sentence | a sentence to refuse |
|---|---|---|
| condition | This bank is cutting, and this wetland is wet in August or it is dry. | A score standing in for the forest. |
| stocks | River, forest, and wetland are the standing systems on this parcel. | A category name standing in for the cottonwoods. |
| flows | Clean water, habitat, and Risk Resilience are what those stocks are doing for this place and the road below. | A flow total standing in for a rescued climate. |
| dependence | This parcel depends on the slope above it, and the town road depends on both. | A map standing in for the person who keeps the ground. |

When the bank, the stock, the flow, and the neighbor can all be pointed at, the model has something true to read. Until then the place is ahead of the tool, which is the right order.

**RealValue** is the bridge we use when that reading has to meet capital. It sets ecosystem-service value against condition, across the same 15 stocks and 19 flows, so someone who has not walked the parcel can see stocks, flows, and condition clearly enough to fund care. The reading can also show a value gap: the distance between the place as it is and the same place in better condition. That gap is a reason to fund work on the ground. The price is a bridge. It is never the worth of the river. This page prints no dollar figure.

The shape of the ledger follows work already in public use. The United Nations standard for [SEEA Ecosystem Accounting](https://seea.un.org/ecosystem-accounting) organizes extent, condition, and services so a living system can sit beside other accounts. The [Ecosystem Services Valuation Database](https://www.esvd.net/) gathers published values in the line of TEEB and de Groot. FEMA enters ecosystem services into hazard-mitigation benefit-cost accounts and publishes the method with its [benefit-cost methodologies](https://www.fema.gov/grants/guidance-tools/benefit-cost-analysis/methodologies). These are methods for legibility. [An account is not a forest](/guide/an-account-is-not-a-forest): the account records a stand, and a person on the ground keeps it alive.

We already run this reading on real parcels. The tool is in use. The honest scope is one place at a time.

## what a model cannot see

The worth is the place itself: the river as a river, the forest as a forest, the fishery as a fishery. RealValue is only a bridge. It makes stocks, flows, and condition legible so capital can see the place well enough to fund its care. The accounting is not the worth. The bridge stays a bridge. The worth stays with the place, and with the person who keeps it.

Hours on a ditch, a gate, a planting, or a burn come first. A landowner and a land steward already practice that care. The model carries it to someone who was not there for the work, and only when a keeper asks.

A careful sentence about one wetland and one road is the size of this reading. We publish no climate-benefit number.

## one way the care gets funded

[Ensurance](https://ensurance.app/?from=guide) is one worked example of this narrow use. We use the tool to read a place: what it needs, what it depends on, and who depends on it, so a person can fund the care. The river remains the river.

A **coin** is general ensurance, a shared instrument for funding care across many places. A **certificate** is specific ensurance, tied to one **agent**, and an agent is an account that stands for a place, a people, or a purpose. Coins, certificates, and agents are live. Volumes are small. One place you already keep is enough: the home ground, the ranch, or the tract a steward already walks.

If you hold the title, the [landowners](/solutions/landowners?from=guide&topic=ai-for-good) page is the door for a reading of your ground. If you steward ground you do not own, the [land stewards](/solutions/land-stewards?from=guide&topic=ai-for-good) page is the door for work already underway. The wider phrase, and the limit on it, is [what AI for good actually is](/guide/what-ai-for-good-actually-is).

## frequently asked questions

### what is AI for nature?

**AI for nature** is a reading of a living place someone already keeps. The river, the forest, the fishery, and the ground are the subject. They exist whether or not a model runs. The model can make that place legible to a person who already cares.

### how can AI help nature?

A model can help list condition, stocks, and flows, and which parcels a place depends on, including which neighbors and which town depend on it in return. The help is real when a keeper uses that list to fund care. Places already in the protocol are at [natural assets](/natural-assets?from=guide).

### what can a model not see?

A model cannot see the worth of the place, and it cannot see the care of the person who keeps it. RealValue can carry stocks, flows, and condition across a bridge so capital can fund protection. The bridge is never the worth. We publish no climate-benefit number for a single reading.
